Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at airports across Spain, the Balearics and the Canaries. Child seat rules, the V-16 light, ZBE zones and AP-7 tolls.
Collecting a Spanish hire car? Since 1 January 2026 it must carry a V-16 warning light instead of triangles. Check the glovebox before you drive off.
Spain is by far the most popular holiday country for UK families. Great Britain residents made 18.2 million visits there in 2024, twice as many as to France (ONS).
Spanish rules for families are stricter than at home in a few places that matter. Children ride in the back, city centres check your car’s environmental label, and some motorways still charge high-season tolls.

Child seats: the back seat rule
In Spain, children 135 cm tall or under must use an approved child restraint suited to their height and weight. Getting it wrong costs about £171 (€200) and four points (DGT).
Those children must also travel in the back. The front seat is allowed only in narrow exceptions, such as when every rear seat is already taken by other children (Fundación MAPFRE).
In a 7 seater that is rarely a problem, because there are five rear seats. Plan who sits where before you load up, since many 7 seaters only have ISOFIX points in the middle row.
The V-16 light and the hi-vis vest
Since 1 January 2026, the connected V-16 warning light has been the only legal way to mark a broken-down Spanish vehicle, replacing warning triangles (Ministerio del Interior).
Anyone who leaves the car on an interurban road or hard shoulder must also wear an approved high-visibility vest (Motor16). A Spanish hire car should carry both, so check at pickup.

One search lines up the 7 seaters at your Spanish airport, with fuel policy and excess for each.
Low emission zones and the DGT label
Spanish cities use the DGT’s environmental labels to decide which cars may enter their low emission zones, or ZBE. Barcelona’s Rondes zone runs on weekdays from 7am to 8pm (RACE), while Malaga’s runs around the clock (Motor16).
Benidorm fines cars that enter without authorisation about £171 (€200), cut to £85 (€100) for prompt payment (Alicante Plaza). Recent hire cars normally carry a C or ECO label, which most zones accept. If you are offered an older car, ask at the desk which label it has.
Tolls: mostly free, with two big exceptions
The AP-7 from Tarragona to the French border has been free since 1 September 2021 (VilaWeb). North of Alicante towards Tarragona it has been free since 1 January 2020 (elDiario.es).
Two stretches still charge. The AP-7 south of Alicante towards Cartagena keeps its toll until 2048, and the Costa del Sol AP-7 from Malaga to Guadiaro charges high-season prices from June to September (Última Hora). Free coast roads run alongside both.
Paperwork and fines
A UK photocard licence is valid in Spain, and you must carry it with your passport or other ID (GOV.UK). On-the-spot fines are halved if you accept them and pay within 20 days.
GOV.UK also warns that criminals target hire cars, sometimes flagging drivers down with claims that something is wrong with the car. Keep bags out of sight and lock the doors in traffic.
Spain is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the airport (GOV.UK). Add your flight number to the booking so the desk knows if you are held up.
Getting a better 7 Seater deal in Spain
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Use the free roads. The A-7 and N-340 run beside the paying AP-7 stretches, at the cost of a slower drive.
- Count child seats against the 135 cm rule. Hire firms usually charge per seat, so bringing your own can be cheaper.
- Book early with free cancellation. July and August see the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.

Questions people ask
Can children sit in the front in Spain?
Not if they are 135 cm or under, except in narrow cases such as every rear seat already being taken by children.
What is a V-16 light?
A connected flashing light placed on the car roof after a breakdown. Since 1 January 2026 it has replaced warning triangles on Spanish-registered cars.
