7 Seater Car Hire Gran Canaria Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Gran Canaria Airport. Roque Nublo booking and shuttle rules, mountain driving tips, ferry limits and child seat law.

Planning a day at Roque Nublo? The old car park has gone and you now need to book. Read the section below before you drive up.

Gran Canaria Airport handled a record 15,826,553 passengers in 2025, up 4% on the year before (Aena). Across the Canary Islands, British tourists numbered more than 5.5 million (Turismo de Islas Canarias).

Most UK families head south from the airport to Maspalomas or Puerto de Mogán. The coast road is easy in a 7 seater. The mountains in the middle of the island are where the planning starts.

Roque Nublo: book first, then take the bus

Roque Nublo is the island’s best-known landmark. Visits between 9am and 5pm must be booked in advance, with about 60 people allowed each hour (elDiario.es).

The old car park at Degollada de la Goleta has gone. Visitors now park at Cruz de Los Llanos and take the line 18 bus, about 10 minutes, to the start of the path. Line 18 also runs from Tejeda and Maspalomas.

Breaking the rules can mean a fine of about £85 to £2,564 (€100 to €3,000). Parking on the roadside near the old car park is the obvious way to get one.

Going without a booking

Before 9am and after 5pm, no booking is needed. For a family that wants the view without the queue, an early start works well. Bring warm layers. The summit area is far cooler than the coast.

Mountain roads in a 7 seater

The roads into the centre of the island climb steeply through tight bends. They are well surfaced, but slow, and a big car feels every hairpin.

Allow more time than the sat nav suggests. Use a lower gear on the way down instead of riding the brakes, and pull in to let local drivers past.

Buses and cyclists share these roads. Spanish law requires at least 1.5 metres of space when you overtake a cyclist, and you must slow to 20 km/h below the speed limit while you pass (El Debate).

Taking the car to another island

Ferries link Gran Canaria with Tenerife and Fuerteventura. Taking a hire car on one is a different matter.

Many Gran Canaria hire firms ban inter-island travel or charge extra for it, and cover may not apply on the ferry or on the other island. Check before you book if an island hop is part of your plan.

Spanish rules in a Spanish hire car

In Spain, children 135 cm tall or under must use an approved child restraint suited to their height and weight. Getting it wrong costs £171 (€200) and four points (Fundación MAPFRE).

Since 1 January 2026, the connected V-16 warning light has been the only legal way to mark a broken-down Spanish vehicle (Ministerio del Interior). Check the glovebox at pickup.

Gran Canaria is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the airport (GOV.UK).

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Beach kit and walking boots both take space, so pack soft bags where you can.

Cutting the cost of a 7 Seater in Gran Canaria

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Pick full-to-full fuel. Most trips are short, so you are unlikely to use a full tank. Pay only for what you use.
  • Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a fortnight add up. Bringing your own is often cheaper.
  • Book early with free cancellation. Winter sun and school holidays bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
