Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Manchester Airport. Lake District passes, Snowdon parking at Pen y Pass, no Clean Air Zone charge and DVLA check code tips.
Heading for the Lake District or Snowdon? The best-known passes are steep, and Snowdon’s main car park must be booked in season. Read the sections below before you set the sat nav.
Manchester Airport served more than 31.1 million passengers in the year to March 2025, up 8.4% on the year before (Manchester Airports Group).
Many UK families who hire a 7 seater there are coming home from abroad, or flying in from Scotland or Northern Ireland for a family occasion. With the Lake District and North Wales both within reach, plenty also use it as the start of a holiday in the hills.
No clean air charge for cars
Greater Manchester will not charge private cars to drive in the city. In January 2025, the government confirmed the region would not bring in a charging Clean Air Zone, backing an investment plan instead (Clean Air Greater Manchester).
So a hire car can drive into Manchester without a daily charge. Parking in the city centre is a different cost, and a 7 seater fits fewer multi-storey spaces than a hatchback.
The Lake District passes
The Lake District National Park Authority warns that the Hardknott and Wrynose passes are among the steepest roads in the country (Lake District National Park).
Hardknott reaches a gradient of 1 in 3, which makes it one of the two steepest roads in England. It is often closed in winter when ice makes it impassable (Hardknott Pass).
The Authority also warns that sat navs send large vehicles down lanes they cannot get round. In a fully loaded 7 seater, avoid the passes unless you are confident. The valley roads reach almost everywhere you will want to go.
If you do drive the passes
Traffic going uphill has priority on steep single-track roads, so pull in for cars coming up. Use a low gear on the way down rather than the brakes, and allow far more time than the sat nav suggests.
Heading for the Lakes? Compare 7 Seaters first
One search shows the 7 seaters at Manchester Airport with the total price for each. Book the right size before the fell roads.
Snowdon: book the car park first
Pen y Pass is the closest car park to the main paths up Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon. In the main season it must be booked in advance through JustPark (Eryri National Park).
Prices run from £25 for up to 8 hours to £45 for a full day. Standard spaces take vehicles up to 5 metres long, which covers almost every 7 seater.
The alternative is to park at Nant Peris or Llanberis and take the Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus. For a family of seven, the bus saves the hunt for a space on a busy day.
Paperwork for a UK hire
Hire firms will want your photocard driving licence. Some also ask for a DVLA check code so they can see your licence record. You can create one online in a few minutes (GOV.UK).
The code only lasts a short time, so create it shortly before you travel. Child seat rules are the usual UK ones: children use a child seat until they are 12 or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK).
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Walking boots and waterproofs for seven take more room than you expect.
Keeping your Manchester 7 Seater hire down
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Book Snowdon parking early or use the bus. Pre-book Pen y Pass, or skip the car park and take the Sherpa bus.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat. On a domestic trip, bringing your own is often easy.
- Book early with free cancellation. School holidays and bank holiday weekends bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
