Dubai welcomed 1.04 million British visitors in the first nine months of 2025, its biggest single market in Western Europe and about one in every 13 international arrivals (Gulf News).

Many are families and multi-generational groups, which suits a 7 seater. Dubai’s roads are wide and well signed. The costs and rules are what catch UK drivers out.

Salik tolls and how they reach your bill

Dubai’s Salik toll gates have no barriers. A tag on the car is read as you pass, and the charge goes to the registered owner, which for a hire car is the hire firm.

Salik uses variable pricing. On weekdays, each gate costs about £1.23 (AED 6) from 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm, and about £0.82 (AED 4) at other times, with free passage from 1am to 6am (Arabian Business). Sundays are charged at the lower rate.

Hire firms pass these charges on, usually with an admin fee per gate. Over a week of peak-hour trips to the beach and the malls, the total soon adds up. Check the hire firm’s Salik terms in the search results before you book.

Heading to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has its own Darb toll gates. Hire firms usually pass those on too, so ask how they are billed if you plan a day trip to the capital.

The rules UK drivers must know

GOV.UK says you can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in the UAE (GOV.UK). Hire firms can still set their own rules on age and driving experience.

The drink-drive limit is zero. GOV.UK says it is illegal to drink and drive, no matter how small the amount, and that your insurance is likely to be invalid after an accident.

Offensive gestures and bad language towards other drivers can lead to heavy penalties, including jail. Flashing headlights often means a driver is coming through, not giving way.

If you are involved in any accident, stop and call the police. GOV.UK says it is illegal to leave the scene before they arrive.

Child seats and the front seat

UAE law requires children under four to use an approved child seat. Children must be at least 10 years old and at least 145 cm tall to sit in the front (Gulf News).

Breaking either rule costs about £82 (AED 400). All passengers must wear seatbelts, including those in the back, and the driver pays the fine if they do not.

The 145 cm front seat rule matters in a 7 seater. With several children on board, a tall 9 year old still has to sit in the back.

UK rules for older children are stricter than the UAE minimum. A child seat until 12 years or 135 cm is the UK standard (GOV.UK), and the safety reasons do not change abroad.

Heat and sand in a big car

A large SUV parked in the sun becomes very hot inside. Run the air conditioning before the children climb in, and check seat buckles and child seat covers before anyone sits down.

Driving off-road in the desert is a different matter from the motorway. Many hire agreements exclude damage from sand and off-road driving. If a desert trip is on your list, book a guided tour rather than taking the hire car.

Seven people, seven cases

Some of the large SUVs in Dubai hire fleets hold more than a European 7 seater. Even so, check the boot space with all seats in use.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

The chart shows common European models. For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater.

Paying less for a 7 Seater in Dubai

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Salik admin fees, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Drive outside peak hours where you can. Salik gates cost less from 10am to 4pm and after 8pm, and nothing from 1am to 6am.
  • Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a week add up. Bringing your own is often cheaper.
  • Book early with free cancellation. School holidays and the cooler winter months bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
