7 Seater Car Hire Edinburgh Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Edinburgh Airport. LEZ rules for hire cars, free park and ride, Scotland’s drink-drive limit and Highland driving tips.

Visiting from England or Wales? Scotland’s drink-drive limit is lower than yours. Read the section below before the first evening out.

Edinburgh Airport handled a record 16,980,588 passengers in 2025, a high for any Scottish airport (Edinburgh Airport).

For families in the south of England, flying to Edinburgh and hiring a 7 seater beats a full day on the M6 and A74(M). You arrive fresh and collect the car a short walk from the terminal.

Return the car before you drop anyone off

Edinburgh’s car rental centre is close to the terminal. The airport says a covered walkway next to the multi-storey car park leads straight to it (Edinburgh Airport).

The terminal forecourt is a different matter. Dropping off there costs £8.50 for up to 10 minutes, then £1 for every minute after that, and it is card only.

So on the way home, skip the forecourt. Drive straight to the rental centre, return the car with everyone on board, and walk to the terminal together. It costs nothing and keeps seven people and the luggage in one place.

The Low Emission Zone

Edinburgh city centre has a Low Emission Zone, enforced since 1 June 2024. It runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and cameras read number plates as you enter (City of Edinburgh Council).

To drive in without a penalty, petrol cars must meet Euro 4, which usually means 2006 or newer. Diesel cars must meet Euro 6, which usually means September 2015 or newer (Traffic Scotland). Penalties double for repeat offences.

Most hire fleets are well inside those dates. The risk comes with older vehicles from smaller local firms. If your quote looks unusually cheap, check the car’s age, or run the plate through the LEZ vehicle checker at pickup.

Glasgow and Aberdeen, along with Dundee, run their own zones on the same standards. If you plan a tour of Scotland’s cities, one check covers them all.

Park outside the city, ride in

A 7 seater in Edinburgh’s Old Town is hard work. The streets are narrow and steep, and parking is expensive.

Ingliston Park and Ride sits just off the A8, beside the road to the airport. It has 1,085 free spaces and is served by the tram and Lothian Buses (City of Edinburgh Council).

It opens from 4am to 2am, and overnight parking is not allowed. It works best for a day in the city if you are staying outside Edinburgh. Hermiston Park and Ride, nearby, allows stays of up to three nights.

Edinburgh 7 Seaters for the Highlands, compared

Scotland’s lower drink-drive limit

Scotland’s limit is 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, or 50 mg per 100 ml of blood. In the rest of the UK it is 35 micrograms of breath, or 80 mg of blood (GOV.UK).

For English and Welsh drivers, that gap is easy to forget. A pint with dinner that would be fine at home can put you over the limit in Scotland, and so can the morning after a late night.

If you are sharing the driving on a family trip, agree who drives the next morning before the first round.

Into the Highlands in a big car

The A9 from Perth to Inverness is the main route north. Average speed cameras have covered it since October 2014 (Transport Scotland). They measure your speed between cameras, so slowing down at each one does not help.

Further west and north, many roads are single track with passing places. Traffic Scotland’s advice is to pull into a passing place on your left, or wait opposite one on your right, and never park in one (Traffic Scotland).

In a wide 7 seater, that means reading the road ahead and pulling in early. Let faster local traffic past too. It is safer and it is what drivers on those roads expect.

Watch for deer, especially at dusk. Traffic Scotland advises against swerving suddenly to avoid one, because the swerve can cause a worse crash.

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Scottish weather means waterproofs and boots on top of the cases, so pack soft bags where you can.

Paperwork for a UK domestic trip

You do not need a passport to fly from elsewhere in the UK, but airlines require photo ID, so check your airline’s rules. Hire firms will want your photocard driving licence.

Some firms also ask for a DVLA check code so they can see your licence record. You can create one online in a few minutes (GOV.UK). Do it before you travel, because the code only lasts a short time.

Child seat rules are the same as at home. Children use a child seat until they are 12 or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK).

Keeping a Scottish road trip affordable in a 7 Seater

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Book well ahead for August. The festivals fill Edinburgh every August, and 7 seaters are among the first cars to go.
  • Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a week add up. On a domestic flight, bringing your own is often easy and free.
  • Book with free cancellation. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
