In summer, you cannot drive to Macarella. The car park closes and a bus runs from Ciutadella instead. Read the beach section below before you plan your days.
Menorca Airport handled 4,210,152 passengers in 2025 (Aena), and traffic was up again by 2.5% in the first eight months of 2026 (Aena). The UK is its biggest international market. In August 2024 alone, 194,129 passengers flew in or out on UK routes (Aena).
The airport is about 5 km from Maó and about 47 km from Ciutadella, at the other end of the island (Spain.info). Wherever your villa is, a 7 seater saves a lot of taxi fares.
Macarella: bus only in summer
The car park for Macarella closed on 1 June 2026, and access became bus-only from Ciutadella. Buses run between 8.25am and 8.20pm, with more departures in July and August (Menorca.info).
Even before the closure, the southern beach car parks fill fast. In May 2026, the Macarella and Cala en Turqueta car parks showed “closed” signs by around 10am to 10.30am. In summer 2025, they were full before 8am (Menorca.info).
For a family of seven, the bus is often the calmer choice. Park in Ciutadella and ride out, then use the 7 seater for the beaches you can drive to.
A limit on cars from 2027
Menorca is moving towards a cap on vehicles, with hire cars the main target. Summer 2026 was a mild trial, with number plate cameras going in at the ports of Maó and Ciutadella (Menorca.info).
By September 2026, the island council had approved a change to the Biosphere Reserve Law so that vehicle numbers can be limited from 2027 (Menorca.info). The details were due to be set in October 2026, to take effect in summer 2027 (Menorca.info).

Stone walls and narrow lanes
The Me-1 runs the length of the island from Maó to Ciutadella. In July 2023, it averaged a record 21,621 vehicles a day at the Ciutadella entrance (Menorca.info).
Off the main road, the lanes are lined with dry stone walls. Menorca has 11,119 km of them (Menorca.info), and on a narrow lane there is nowhere to pull over. In a wide 7 seater, take the bends slowly and be ready to reverse to a gateway.
The whole island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993 (MITECO). The coastal path, the Camí de Cavalls, is a 185 km walking and riding route (Spain.info), so drive to a trailhead and walk from there.

Parking in Maó and Ciutadella
Maó has three underground car parks with 662 spaces between them, plus blue and orange zones on the street and free parking at Fort de l’Eau (Menorca.info). The orange zone allows longer stays at lower rates.
Ciutadella has around 9,419 parking spaces for more than 25,000 vehicles, and its mobility plan proposes sending visitors’ cars to car parks on the edge of town in summer (Menorca.info). For an evening in the old town, park on the edge and walk in.
Spanish rules in a Spanish hire car
In Spain, children under 1.35 metres must use an approved child seat on the back seat. GOV.UK also says you can drive on a UK photocard licence, and that on-the-spot fines are halved if paid within 20 days (GOV.UK).
The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g of alcohol per litre of blood, and lower for new drivers. Fines run from about £425 (€500) to about £850 (€1,000) for serious cases (DGT).
Since 1 January 2026, the connected V-16 warning light has been the only legal way to mark a broken-down Spanish car, and not carrying one costs about £68 (€80) (DGT). Check the glovebox at pickup.
From 1 October 2026, when you overtake a cyclist on an interurban road you must slow by at least 20 km/h and leave at least 1.5 metres (DGT). On Menorca’s narrow lanes, wait for a straight before you pass.
Menorca is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the airport. GOV.UK says to be prepared for longer waits at the border (GOV.UK).

Aena lists the car hire desks on the ground floor of the terminal (Aena). Firms based off the airport meet you outside and take you to their depot, and your voucher will say which.
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.
For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. On Menorca’s walled lanes, a slightly smaller car is easier.

- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Use the beach bus. It saves a wasted drive to a full car park in high summer.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a fortnight add up. Bringing your own is often cheaper.
- Book early with free cancellation. 7 seaters go first in July and August. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
