Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Murcia Airport. Mar Menor beaches, record summer heat, the toll-free Alicante bypass and Spain’s new V-16 light.
July 2026 was the hottest month on record in the Region of Murcia, with an average daily high of 36.2°C. Never leave children in a parked car, and plan long drives for the morning.
Murcia Airport, officially Región de Murcia International, handled 949,000 passengers in 2025, up from 910,000 the year before. Of those, 840,700 flew on international routes, and Aena names the UK and Ireland among its main markets (Aena).
London links run deep. In July 2024, flights to the London airports carried 36% of the airport’s traffic for the month (Murcia Today).
The Mar Menor beaches
The Mar Menor, the warm salt lagoon behind La Manga, is the main draw for families. In regional government tests published on 6 July 2026, every monitored beach was rated excellent and fit for bathing, from Playa Honda to Los Nietos (Región de Murcia).
The water is shallow and calm, which suits small children. Pack shade, because there is little natural cover on the sand.
Heat and a parked car
AEMET says July 2026 was the warmest month in the Region of Murcia in at least 66 years. The average daily high was 36.2°C, and Murcia city had a warm night above 20°C on every one of the 31 nights (AEMET).
Spain’s traffic authority says never to leave people or animals in a parked car, even for a few minutes. It also advises avoiding the roads from 1pm to 5pm in hot weather (DGT). Run the air conditioning before the children climb into the back row.

Tolls and town centres
Heading north to Alicante? The AP-7 Alicante bypass is now permanently toll-free, after the Spanish government confirmed it on 9 December 2025 (Alicante Plaza).
Cartagena has the region’s low emission zone, covering the historic centre and the Ensanche, though early enforcement focused on information rather than fines (Murcia Today). A modern hire car is unlikely to be affected, but check the council’s rules if you plan to drive into the old town.
Spanish rules for visitors
Since 1 January 2026, Spanish cars must carry the connected V-16 warning light in place of triangles (DGT). Check it is in the glovebox before you leave.
Children under 1.35 metres must travel in an approved child seat on the back seat. GOV.UK also notes that on-the-spot fines are halved if paid within 20 days (GOV.UK).
The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g per litre of blood, and 0.3 g in your first two years of driving (DGT). From 1 October 2026, give cyclists at least 1.5 metres when you overtake outside towns (DGT).
Spain is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies when you land (GOV.UK).
Seven people and the beach kit
A large suitcase takes 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters offer about 340 to 350 litres of boot (Auto Express).

With buggies and beach gear too, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats with more space, or step up to an 8 or 9 seater.
Collecting the car at Murcia Airport
Aena lists car hire among the services at the airport (Aena). Your voucher shows whether your firm has a desk in the terminal or meets you outside.

Getting a better deal on a Murcia 7 Seater
- Use the free bypass. The AP-7 round Alicante costs nothing now, so there is no need to pay for a detour.
- Bring your own child seats. Daily charges for two or three seats add up over a fortnight.
- Compare the total. Deposit, excess, fuel terms and extra driver fees all sit outside the headline rate.
- Book before the school holidays. Summer demand from UK families is high, so lock in a cancellable rate early.
