Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Lanzarote Airport. Timanfaya costs for seven, the Papagayo dirt track, fuel prices in GBP and Spanish child seat rules.
Planning a trip to the Fire Mountains or Papagayo? Read the sections below first. Both cost more for a big group than most visitors expect.
British visitors made up 53% of all tourists to Lanzarote between April and June 2025, up from 46% a decade earlier (La Voz de Lanzarote).
César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport handled a record 8,920,901 passengers in 2025 (La Voz de Lanzarote).
The island is small. Puerto del Carmen is a short drive from the terminal, and you can cross Lanzarote in about an hour. That makes a 7 seater easy to live with. The costs that catch families out are at the places you drive to.
Timanfaya for seven
Timanfaya National Park, the Montañas del Fuego, is the island’s most famous sight. You cannot drive the volcano route yourself. You park at Islote de Hilario and take the 35-minute coach tour included in the ticket (CACT Lanzarote).
The basic ticket costs about £25.64 (€30), and children under 6 go free. If everyone in a group of seven pays the full price, that is about £179 (€210) before you have parked.
Tickets must be bought online in advance, and changes and refunds are not allowed. Arrive 15 minutes before your time slot. Coaches leave every 20 minutes.
The car park on a slope
The park itself warns visitors to take care opening car doors at Islote de Hilario, because the slope can swing them into the next car.
That matters more in a 7 seater. Long, heavy rear doors and a child jumping out on the downhill side are a bad mix. Open the downhill doors yourself and keep a hand on them.
Papagayo: a dirt track and a gate fee
The Papagayo beaches sit inside the Los Ajaches Natural Monument at the southern tip of the island. Non-residents pay about £2.56 (€3) per car to enter, collected by Yaiza council (La Voz de Lanzarote).
The fee is small. The road is the issue. It is an unpaved track of about seven kilometres from Las Coloradas to the car parks, and summer traffic wears it down (La Voz de Lanzarote).
Many hire agreements exclude damage on unpaved roads, even when you have bought cover for the excess. Read the terms before you take a low 7 seater SUV down the track. Driving slowly keeps the dust down and the stones off the paintwork.

Cheap fuel, and why the fuel policy still matters
Fuel in Lanzarote averaged about £0.98 (€1.151) a litre in August 2025, and the lowest diesel price in Arrecife was about £0.85 (€0.989) (La Voz de Lanzarote).
With fuel that cheap and distances that short, a thirsty 7 seater costs little to run. The fuel policy still matters. A full-to-full policy means you pay only for what you use. A full-to-empty policy charges you for a tank you will probably not finish on an island this size.
Taking the car to Fuerteventura
The ferry from Playa Blanca to Corralejo makes a day trip to Fuerteventura easy. Taking a hire car on it is a different matter.
Many Lanzarote hire firms ban inter-island travel or charge extra for it, and cover may not apply on the ferry or on the other island. Check before you book if a Fuerteventura day is part of your plan. Booking a separate car in Corralejo is sometimes simpler.
Spanish rules in a Spanish hire car
Lanzarote is part of Spain, and Spanish road rules apply.
In Spain, children 135 cm tall or under must use an approved child restraint suited to their height and weight. Getting it wrong costs £171 (€200) and four points (Fundación MAPFRE).
Since 1 January 2026, the connected V-16 warning light has been the only legal way to mark a broken-down Spanish vehicle, replacing warning triangles (Ministerio del Interior). A Spanish-registered hire car should carry one. Check the glovebox at pickup.
The Canary Islands are in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the airport. Leave extra time on arrival in busy weeks (GOV.UK).
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Beach kit adds up fast on an island holiday, so leave room for it.
Paying less for a Lanzarote 7 Seater
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Check the unpaved road clause. If Papagayo is on your list, pick a deal whose cover does not exclude dirt tracks.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a fortnight add up. Bringing your own is often cheaper.
- Book early with free cancellation. 7 seaters are in high demand in the school holidays and over winter half term. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.

Questions people ask
Can I drive my hire car through Timanfaya?
No. Private cars can only reach the car park at Islote de Hilario. The volcano route is by coach only, and the coach is included in the ticket.
Can I take a Lanzarote hire car on the ferry to Fuerteventura?
Only if your hire firm allows it. Many ban inter-island travel or charge a fee, so check the terms before you book.
Is the road to Papagayo suitable for a 7 seater?
It is an unpaved track of about seven kilometres. A 7 seater can manage it slowly, but check that your hire agreement covers unpaved roads first.
Do I need a child seat for my 10 year old in Lanzarote?
If they are 135 cm or under, yes. Spanish law uses height, and the fine is £171 (€200).
