Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Barcelona Airport. The toll-free AP-7, low emission zone rules, highway scam warnings and Spanish child seat law.
Heading for the Costa Brava? The main motorway north no longer charges tolls. Read the section below before you pay for a toll tag.
Barcelona-El Prat handled a record 57,483,036 passengers in 2025, making it one of the busiest airports in Spain (Aena).
Many UK families who fly in are not staying in the city at all. They are heading for villas on the Costa Brava or the Costa Daurada. A 7 seater suits that trip well, as long as you keep it out of central Barcelona.
The AP-7 north is free now
The AP-7 from Tarragona to La Jonquera on the French border stopped charging tolls on 1 September 2021. The AP-2 and the C-33 near Barcelona went free on the same day (VilaWeb).
Older guides still warn about toll costs to the Costa Brava. They no longer apply on the AP-7.
Some Catalan roads do still charge. They include the C-32 south from Castelldefels to El Vendrell and the C-16 to Manresa through the Vallvidrera tunnels. Ask at the desk how tolls are billed if your route uses them.
Barcelona’s low emission zone
The Rondes low emission zone covers more than 95 square kilometres inside the Ronda de Dalt and the Ronda del Litoral. It runs Monday to Friday from 7am to 8pm (RACE).
Vehicles without a DGT environmental label cannot enter during those hours, and the fine is about £171 (€200). A modern Spanish-registered hire car carries a label, so it can drive in.
That does not make driving in the city a good idea. Parking is scarce and expensive, and the narrow streets of the old town are no place for a 7 seater. Park at your hotel or outside the city and take the metro in.

Watch for roadside scams
GOV.UK warns that so-called highway pirates in Spain target foreign-registered and hire cars. They may flag you down, saying there is something wrong with your car or that you have damaged theirs (GOV.UK).
If you need to check the car, GOV.UK advises stopping only in a public, well-lit place such as a service station.
A 7 seater full of luggage is an obvious target. Keep bags out of sight, and never leave passports or phones on the seats, even for a minute.
Spanish rules in a Spanish hire car
In Spain, children 135 cm tall or under must use an approved child restraint suited to their height and weight. Getting it wrong costs £171 (€200) and four points (Fundación MAPFRE).
Since 1 January 2026, the connected V-16 warning light has been the only legal way to mark a broken-down Spanish vehicle (Ministerio del Interior). Check the glovebox at pickup.
GOV.UK says you must carry a valid driving licence and ID when you drive in Spain. Keep your passport on you rather than in the car.
Crossing into France or Andorra
The Costa Brava is close to France, and Andorra is a few hours inland. Some hire firms charge a cross-border fee or limit which countries you can enter. Andorra is outside the EU, so check that your cover includes it before you go.
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. With bags in the boot, a parcel shelf or cover keeps them out of sight.
Crossing into France? Our Carcassonne Airport guide covers the walled city and the Aude, and our Perpignan Airport guide covers the coast just over the border.
Spending less on a 7 Seater from Barcelona
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and cross-border fees all sit outside the headline price.
- Skip the toll tag for the Costa Brava. The AP-7 north is free. You only need to think about tolls on the C-32 south or the C-16.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a fortnight add up. Bringing your own is often cheaper.
- Book early with free cancellation. July and August see the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.

Questions people ask
Is the AP-7 to the Costa Brava a toll road?
Not any more. Tolls on the AP-7 from Tarragona to the French border were removed in September 2021.
Can a hire car drive into Barcelona’s low emission zone?
Yes, if it has a DGT environmental label, which modern Spanish hire cars do. The zone runs on weekdays from 7am to 8pm.
Is it safe to leave luggage in a hire car in Barcelona?
Keep it out of sight and lock the car every time. GOV.UK warns that hire cars are targeted, so take valuables with you.
Can I drive a Barcelona hire car into Andorra?
Only if your hire firm allows it. Andorra is outside the EU, so check your cover and any cross-border fee first.
