Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Carcassonne Airport. Parking at La Cité, Ryanair routes from the UK, French child seat rules and summer wildfire risk.
In August 2025 a wildfire in the Corbières, south east of Carcassonne, burned more than 11,000 hectares and closed roads around Lézignan. In summer, check for closures before you head into the hills.
Carcassonne Airport has year-round flights to London and Manchester, with more routes added in summer (Carcassonne Tourist Office). Ryanair’s summer 2026 plans included daily Stansted flights alongside several regional UK routes (Connexion).
The airport sits just outside the town, so La Cité is a short first drive. For seven people heading to a gîte in the Aude, a hire car is close to essential.
Parking at La Cité
The medieval city has car parks at its gates. P0 at the Narbonnaise Gate costs about 85p (€1) per 15 minutes for the first two hours, then about 43p (€0.50) for each 45 minutes. P1 and P2 charge the same but are free from 8pm to 8am (Carcassonne Tourist Office).
The Pont Neuf car park, below the walls, gives the first 30 minutes free. Arrive early in July and August, when the gates are busiest.
Day trips from Carcassonne
Toulouse and Perpignan are each about an hour away, and Montpellier about two (Carcassonne Tourist Office). That puts the Mediterranean beaches and the Pyrenees within reach of a day out.
The A61 motorway towards Toulouse and Narbonne charges tolls. Prices on the network that runs it rose by an average of 0.62% from 1 February 2026 (Journal de l’Économie).

Summer wildfires in the Aude
The fire that began on 5 August 2025 burned more than 11,000 hectares of the Corbières by the following day. It closed the A61 junction at Lézignan-Corbières along with the A9 towards Spain (Feux de Forêt).
GOV.UK advises calling 18 or 112 if you see a wildfire in France (GOV.UK). Park on gravel or tarmac rather than dry grass, and follow any road closure you meet.
French rules for UK families
Children up to the age of 10 must travel in an approved child seat suited to their size. The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g per litre, and 0.2 g for drivers on a probationary licence (ONISR).
The motorway limit is 130 km/h, falling to 110 km/h in rain. Two-way roads without a central divider are limited to 80 km/h, and towns to 50 km/h (Sécurité routière).
A UK photocard licence is valid in France (GOV.UK). France is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies when you land (GOV.UK).
Fitting in seven and the cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With all seven seats up, the roomiest common 7 seaters keep about 340 to 350 litres of boot (Auto Express).

For a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats with more space. The lanes in the Cathar villages are narrow, so do not oversize without need.
Collecting the car at Carcassonne Airport
A regional travel guide puts the hire car area directly opposite the arrivals terminal, less than a minute’s walk away (Go Languedoc). With a small terminal, the walk with cases and children is short.

Cutting the cost of a Carcassonne 7 Seater
- Park outside the busy hours. The La Cité car parks are free overnight, and early arrivals find spaces.
- Plan around the tolls. The A61 is quick but costs more, so weigh it against the free roads.
- Compare the full price. The excess, deposit, fuel policy and second driver fees all change the total.
- Book early for summer. With few flights and a small fleet, lock in a cancellable rate well ahead.
