7 Seater Car Hire France

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at airports across France. The under-10 child seat rule, Class 1 tolls under 2 metres, Crit’Air zones and EES at the border.

Travelling with an eight or nine year old? France requires a child seat for every child under 10, whatever their height. Read the child seat section below before you pack.

France is the second most visited country for UK holidaymakers, with 9.1 million visits by Great Britain residents in 2024 (ONS).

Many families start in Paris for Disneyland or in Nice for the Riviera, and our search covers airports right across France. French rules differ from the UK on child seats and city access, and tolls depend on your car’s height.

Where to hire a 7 Seater in France

France has dozens of airports with hire desks, many of them small regional ones served directly from the UK. Passenger numbers are for 2025, from the French civil aviation authority. Where we have a full airport guide, the name links to it, and we add new guides regularly.

  • Paris Charles de Gaulle. 72.0 million passengers. For Disneyland Paris and northern France.
  • Paris Orly. 34.9 million. South of the city, handy for the Loire.
  • Nice. 15.2 million. The Côte d’Azur and the Alps behind it.
  • Marseille. 11.3 million. For Provence and the Camargue.
  • Lyon. 10.7 million. A main airport for the Alps in winter.
  • Geneva. In Switzerland, but with a French sector, and the closest big airport to Chamonix and Annecy.
  • Toulouse. 7.6 million. For the Pyrenees and the Tarn.
  • Nantes. 7.2 million. Southern Brittany and the Vendée coast.
  • Bordeaux. 5.9 million. Wine country and the Atlantic beaches.
  • Montpellier. 1.7 million. Languedoc beaches and the Cévennes.
  • Perpignan. 476,449. For Collioure, the Roussillon coast and the drive into Catalonia.
  • Carcassonne. 304,448. Right beside the walled city, with year-round flights from London and Manchester.
  • Limoges. 281,180. For the Limousin and the northern Dordogne.
  • Bergerac. 242,326. In the heart of the Dordogne.

Child seats: the under-10 rule

France ties its child seat law to age. Children under 10 must use a child seat, whatever their height, and drivers who break the rule face a fine of up to about £641 (€750) (Sécurité routière).

The UK lets children stop at 135 cm (GOV.UK), so a tall eight or nine year old who has left the booster at home still needs one in France. Count seats by age, not height, when you book.

Tolls: the 2 metre line

French motorways charge by vehicle class. Class 1 covers saloons, estates, MPVs and 4x4s up to 2 metres tall, and Class 2 starts above that height (VINCI Autoroutes).

Almost every 7 seater car sits in Class 1. A tall van-based people carrier, or any car with a roof box, can tip into Class 2 and pay more at every barrier.

The same 2 metre line applies at Disneyland Paris, where parking costs about £25.64 (€30) a day for cars under 2 metres and more for taller vehicles (Sortir à Paris).

Crit’Air stickers and city zones

French cities use Crit’Air stickers to control access to their low emission zones, or ZFE. GOV.UK notes that a pollution sticker is needed to drive in central Paris on weekdays from 8am to 8pm (GOV.UK).

Nice bans only Crit’Air 5 and unclassified vehicles, with a fine of about £58 (€68) (Leocare). A modern French hire car will be Crit’Air 1 or 2, but check the sticker is on the windscreen at pickup.

Speed limits and drink driving

The motorway limit is 130 km/h in dry weather, dropping to 110 km/h in rain (Justice.fr). The Paris Périphérique dropped to 50 km/h in October 2024, and its cameras were reset to match (Sortir à Paris).

GOV.UK says the French drink-drive limit is lower than in England and Wales. The safest plan is not to drink at all if you are driving.

Paperwork and the border

France is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the airport. You may need to give fingerprints and a photo, though children aged 11 or under are not fingerprinted (GOV.UK).

Hire firms may ask for a DVLA check code to see your licence record. You can create one on GOV.UK up to 21 days before you collect the car.

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. A roof box solves the luggage problem but brings back the 2 metre toll question.

Paying less for a 7 Seater in France

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Stay under 2 metres. A Class 1 car pays less at every toll barrier and at Disneyland parking.
  • Count child seats by age. Every child under 10 needs one, so you may need more seats than at home.
  • Book early with free cancellation. July and August see the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.

Questions people ask

Does my child need a car seat in France?

Yes, if they are under 10, whatever their height. That is stricter than the UK’s 135 cm rule.

Which toll class is a 7 Seater in France?

Usually Class 1, which covers cars up to 2 metres tall. A tall van-based car or a roof box can push it into Class 2.

Do French hire cars have Crit’Air stickers?

They should, because French cities check them. Look for the sticker on the windscreen before you leave the car park.

Will my children be fingerprinted at the French border?

Not if they are aged 11 or under. GOV.UK says younger children are not fingerprinted under the EU Entry/Exit System.
