Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Tenerife South Airport. Teide access changes, Masca road closures, La Gomera ferry rules and Spanish child seat law.
Planning to drive up Mount Teide or down to Masca? Both have access rules that can stop a car at the barrier. Read the sections below first.
Tenerife welcomed 2,392,915 British tourists in 2025, about 37% of everyone who visited the island (Turismo de Islas Canarias).
Tenerife South Airport handled a record 13,969,678 passengers the same year (Aena). Most UK visitors stay a short drive away in Adeje and Arona, which took 56% of the island’s tourists between them.
A 7 seater makes the airport run easy. The bigger questions are about where you can take it once you are there.
Teide is moving away from private cars
Mount Teide National Park is the drive every visitor wants to do. The island government, which took over running the park, has announced an entrance fee and plans to limit private traffic, with electric shuttle buses replacing cars over time (Teneriffa News).
The rules are changing in stages, so check the current position before you set off. A trip that once worked by car may now need a shuttle ticket.
Snow brings its own rules. After heavy snowfall, private cars have been allowed in only between set hours, on a one-way system, with parking limited to a few official car parks (Teneriffa News). Parking on the verge in a big car on a busy snow day is a quick way to get a fine.
Masca: closed to visitor cars on fire-risk days
The TF-436 to Masca is narrow and steep, and one of the best-known roads on the island. On days of high fire risk, the island government closes it to tourist cars between 9am and 4pm, with checkpoints at Las Lagunetas and Santiago del Teide (elDiario.es).
Local residents and workers can still drive through, and public buses up to 7.5 metres keep running. Visitors use extra TITSA buses from Santiago del Teide and Buenavista instead.
These closures come in at short notice. Have a back-up plan for the day, and check the island government’s alerts the evening before.
Masca in a 7 seater on an open day
When the road is open, it is still one of the tightest drives on the island. Buses use it too, and passing places are short. A 7 seater is wide for the hairpins. Take it slowly, and give way early where the road narrows.

Taking the car to La Gomera
The ferry from Los Cristianos to La Gomera makes a popular day trip. Taking a hire car on it is a different matter.
Many Tenerife hire firms ban inter-island travel or charge extra for it, and cover may not apply on the ferry or on the other island. Check before you book if La Gomera is part of your plan.
Spanish rules in a Spanish hire car
In Spain, children 135 cm tall or under must use an approved child restraint suited to their height and weight. Getting it wrong costs £171 (€200) and four points (Fundación MAPFRE).
Since 1 January 2026, the connected V-16 warning light has been the only legal way to mark a broken-down Spanish vehicle (Ministerio del Interior). Check the glovebox at pickup.
Tenerife is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the airport (GOV.UK).
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Teide is cold even in summer, so leave room for jumpers.
Spending less on a 7 Seater in Tenerife
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Pick the right fuel policy. Most UK visitors stay near the airport. A full-to-full policy means you only pay for the fuel you use.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a fortnight add up. Bringing your own is often cheaper.
- Book early with free cancellation. Winter sun and school holidays bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
