7 Seater Car Hire UK

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at airports across the UK, from Heathrow to Glasgow. ULEZ, Clean Air Zones, Scottish LEZs, tolls and child seat rules.

Driving into a city? London, Birmingham, Bristol and four Scottish cities run clean air or low emission zones. Read the zones section below before you set off.

Heathrow alone handled 84.5 million passengers in the year to June 2026, and eight more UK airports each passed 8 million (CAA).

Hiring a 7 seater at home looks simple. You know the roads and the rules. The catches are the charging zones and the tolls. Both apply to hire cars exactly as they do to your own.

Clean air and low emission zones

The UK has no single national scheme. Each city sets its own rules, and cameras read every number plate.

London

The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all London boroughs and costs £12.50 a day for cars that do not meet its standards (TfL).

Central London’s Congestion Charge is separate. It rose to £18 a day from 2 January 2026, and every car pays it however clean it is (BVRLA).

Birmingham and Bristol

Both run Class D Clean Air Zones, which charge private cars that fall short of the standard (GOV.UK). Birmingham charges £8 a day inside the A4540 Middleway (Fleet World), and Bristol £9 a day (Fleet News).

Scotland

Scotland has four LEZs, in the centres of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow (mygov.scot). They ban non-compliant cars rather than charging them, and enforce with penalty notices.

Most modern hire cars meet every one of these standards. The risk comes with an older car from a smaller local firm, so check the age of the car if a quote looks unusually cheap.

Tolls you might meet

The Dartford Crossing on the M25 costs £3.50 for a car, or £2.80 with a pre-pay account, and is free between 10pm and 6am (National Highways). There are no booths, so you must pay by midnight the day after you cross (GOV.UK).

The M6 Toll near Birmingham charges cars £4 for a single zone on its standard pay-as-you-drive price (M6toll). Both Severn crossings into Wales have been free since 17 December 2018 (GOV.UK).

On a hire car, an unpaid charge goes to the hire firm as the registered keeper. It usually comes back to you with an admin fee on top.

Licences and child seats

A standard category B licence covers vehicles with up to eight passenger seats and a maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg (GOV.UK). Every 7 seater car falls inside that.

Hire firms may ask for a DVLA check code to see your licence record. You can create one on GOV.UK, and it lasts 21 days.

Children must use a child seat until they are 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK). A planned airport collection never counts as the kind of unexpected short trip where a child can go without one.

In Scotland, the drink-drive limit is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, against 80 mg in the rest of the UK (GOV.UK).

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. For a UK trip, soft bags also squeeze into gaps that hard cases cannot.

Spending less on a 7 Seater in the UK

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Check the car against the zones. A compliant car avoids ULEZ and Clean Air Zone charges on every day you drive in.
  • Pay tolls and charges yourself. Paying the Dart Charge on time avoids a penalty plus the hire firm’s admin fee.
  • Book early with free cancellation. School holidays bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.

Can I drive a 7 Seater on a normal UK licence?

Yes. A category B licence covers up to eight passenger seats and 3,500 kg, which includes every 7 seater car.

Only if they fail the standards, and most modern hire cars pass. The Congestion Charge is different, because every car pays it.

England’s charging zones are London’s ULEZ and the Clean Air Zones in Birmingham and Bristol. Scotland bans older cars from LEZs in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Who pays if I miss the Dartford charge?

The penalty goes to the hire firm as the registered keeper, and it is usually passed back to you with an admin fee.
