7 Seater Car Hire Luton Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Luton Airport. Woburn Safari Park rules for hire cars, Whipsnade drive-in prices, London charges and DVLA check codes.

Taking the children to Woburn Safari Park? The animals come right up to the car, and the park does not cover damage to it. Read the section below before you drive in.

London Luton Airport handled 17.5 million passengers in 2025 (CAPA).

For families hiring a 7 seater, Luton’s location is the draw. Two of the best-known animal parks in England are a short drive away in Bedfordshire, and both let you take the car inside. That suits a big family well, but there are rules a hire car driver needs to know first.

Woburn Safari Park in a hire car

Woburn’s Road Safari takes you through the animal reserves in your own car. The park’s rules are strict, and some of them matter more in a hire car than in your own (Woburn Safari Park).

Windows and doors, sunroofs included, must stay closed in the carnivore and monkey sections. Soft tops and convertibles are not allowed in those areas at all. The speed limit is 15 mph throughout, and you must stay in the car.

Who pays if an animal damages the car

Woburn says visitors enter at their own risk, and that it does not accept liability for damage to vehicles unless it was negligent.

On a hire car, that leaves you facing the hire firm’s damage charge or your excess. Check what your cover includes before you go in. If you are worried, the park has a bypass route that skips the carnivore and monkey sections.

Whipsnade Zoo: drive in or walk

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo gives you two choices. You can park free outside and walk round, or pay extra to drive into the zoo and park in its designated areas (Whipsnade Zoo).

Car entry costs £30 a car in the main season, roughly mid-February to the start of November, and £15 the rest of the year. It is bought on arrival and cannot be booked ahead.

For a family of seven, driving in can make sense. The zoo covers a large site, and the car carries the picnic and tired children between stops. Motorhomes and commercial vehicles are not allowed in, but a 7 seater is fine.

Paperwork for a UK hire

Hire firms will want your photocard driving licence. Some also ask for a DVLA check code so they can see your licence record. You can create one online in a few minutes (GOV.UK).

The code only lasts a short time, so create it shortly before you travel. Child seat rules are the usual UK ones: children use a child seat until they are 12 or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK).

Heading into London

Luton is outside London’s charging zones, but central London is not. The Congestion Charge costs £18 a day (BVRLA), and the ULEZ covers every London borough (TfL).

Most modern hire cars meet ULEZ standards. The Congestion Charge applies to petrol and diesel cars regardless, so for a day in central London, the train from Luton Airport Parkway is often the easier option.

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. A day at the zoo needs space for a pushchair too.

Getting a better price on a Luton 7 Seater

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Check your excess before the safari. Low excess cover matters more when animals can come right up to the car.
  • Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat. If you are coming home from holiday, your own seats may already be with you.
  • Book early with free cancellation. School holidays and bank holiday weekends bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
