Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Birmingham Airport. Clean Air Zone rules and charges, M6 Toll prices for 7 seaters, DVLA check codes and child seat rules.
Driving into Birmingham city centre? It has a Clean Air Zone that charges older cars, and the M6 Toll sits just up the road. Read the sections below before you plan the route.
Birmingham Airport handled 13,654,108 passengers in 2025, the most in its history (Birmingham Airport).
Many of the families hiring a 7 seater there live in the Midlands and are coming home from abroad with more people or luggage than their own car takes. Others fly in from Scotland or Northern Ireland for a family event. Either way, the first decision is often whether to drive through the city or around it.
Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone
Birmingham’s is one of only two English Clean Air Zones on the GOV.UK list that charge private cars. Bristol is the other. Both are Class D zones, which cover cars as well as vans and heavier vehicles (GOV.UK).
The zone covers the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway ring road. Cars that do not meet the standard pay £8 a day (Fleet World).
The standard is Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel. Most hire fleets are well inside that, so a modern hire car drives in free. If you are offered an older diesel, check its plate on the GOV.UK vehicle checker before you go into the city.
If a charge does apply, GOV.UK says you must pay by 11:59pm on the sixth day after you drive in. Miss it, and the penalty goes to the hire firm, which will pass it on with an admin fee.
The M6 Toll
Heading north from the airport, you can take the M6 through Birmingham or the M6 Toll around it. The toll road is often quicker at busy times, but it costs money.
M6toll prices depend on vehicle class and how many toll zones you pass through. For cars, a single zone costs £4, with longer journeys costing more (M6toll).
A 7 seater travels in the same class as an ordinary car, so it pays the car price. Prices are reviewed regularly, so check the current figure before you set off.
Which route to pick
For a family with tired children and a flight to recover from, the toll can be worth it on a Friday afternoon. Late at night or on a quiet Sunday, the free M6 is usually fine.

Paperwork for a UK hire
Hire firms will want your photocard driving licence. Some also ask for a DVLA check code so they can see your licence record. You can create one online in a few minutes (GOV.UK).
The code only lasts a short time, so create it shortly before you travel. Child seat rules are the usual UK ones: children use a child seat until they are 12 or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK).
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Coming home from a fortnight away, the cases are rarely lighter than when you left.
Spending less on a Birmingham 7 Seater
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Check the car before the Clean Air Zone. A compliant car costs nothing to drive in. An older diesel can cost £8 a day plus any penalty.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat. If you are coming home from holiday, your own seats may already be with you.
- Book early with free cancellation. School holidays and bank holiday weekends bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
