Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Glasgow Airport. LEZ rules and fines, A83 Rest and Be Thankful closures, CalMac ferry bookings and Scotland’s drink-drive limit.
Heading west to Argyll or the islands? The A83 can close at short notice, and island ferries need the car booked in advance. Read the sections below before you set off.
Glasgow Airport handled 8,337,784 passengers in the twelve months to June 2026, up 2.3% on the year before (Travel Extra).
The airport sits west of the city, which puts Loch Lomond and the Clyde ferry ports within easy reach. That is where a 7 seater earns its keep, and where the planning matters most.
Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone
Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone covers about a square mile of the city centre, bounded by the M8 to the north and west and the River Clyde to the south. It has run 24 hours a day since 1 June 2023, and the M8 itself is outside it (Glasgow City Council).
Petrol cars must meet Euro 4, usually 2006 or newer, and diesel cars Euro 6, usually September 2015 or newer. Most hire cars are far newer than that.
The penalties climb fast for repeat entries. The first is £60, halved if you pay within 14 days. After that it doubles each time, up to £480 for a car, and only resets after 90 days without another breach.
If you are given an older car, check its plate on the LEZ vehicle checker before you drive into the centre.
The Rest and Be Thankful
The A83 over the Rest and Be Thankful is the main road from Loch Lomond to Inveraray and Kintyre. It is prone to landslips, and it closes when the hillside is judged unsafe.
When it closes, traffic usually moves to the Old Military Road, a single-track road next to it, run as a convoy. That takes about 15 to 20 minutes instead of 3 to 6. In bad conditions, traffic takes a much longer diversion on other A roads, which can add about 30 miles (BEAR Scotland).
Check Traffic Scotland before you leave. In a 7 seater with children on board, a long diversion is much easier to handle if you know about it in advance.

Island ferries with a hire car
Arran and Bute are a short drive from the airport, and CalMac ferries also carry cars from Oban to Mull and the islands beyond.
CalMac asks passengers to book online in advance, and drivers must be ready to board at least 30 minutes before departure (CalMac). Vehicle space on summer sailings goes early, so book the car on the ferry as soon as your hire is confirmed.
Check your hire agreement too. Many UK hire firms allow ferry crossings within Scotland, but it is worth confirming before you buy the ticket.
Scotland’s drink-drive limit
Scotland’s limit is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, against 80 mg in the rest of the UK (GOV.UK). For visitors from England and Wales, a drink that would be fine at home can put you over the limit in Scotland.
Paperwork for a UK hire
Hire firms will want your photocard driving licence. Some also ask for a DVLA check code so they can see your licence record. You can create one online in a few minutes (GOV.UK).
Child seat rules are the usual UK ones: children use a child seat until they are 12 or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK).
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. A longer vehicle can cost more on some ferries, so check the length before you book.

Cutting the cost of a 7 Seater from Glasgow
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Book ferries early. Car space on summer sailings goes first, and a missed booking can cost you a day.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat. On a domestic trip, bringing your own is often easy.
- Book early with free cancellation. Summer and the Scottish school holidays, which start earlier than England’s, bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
