7 Seater Car Hire Bristol Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Bristol Airport. Clean Air Zone charges, the £1 contactless Clifton bridge toll, free Severn crossings and UK hire paperwork.

Bristol city centre has a Clean Air Zone that charges older cars, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge takes card payments only. Read the sections below before you head into the city.

More than 10 million passengers used Bristol Airport in 2024, about 7% more than the year before (ADS Group).

The airport sits south of the city, close to the Mendips and the Somerset coast. Families hiring a 7 seater there are often heading for Devon and Cornwall, or over the Severn into Wales. Some of the most useful things to know are about getting through Bristol itself.

Bristol’s Clean Air Zone

Bristol’s Clean Air Zone is a Class D zone, so it charges private cars that do not meet its standard as well as vans and lorries (GOV.UK).

Cars that fall short pay £9 a day, and the zone runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Missing the payment brings a penalty of £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days (Fleet News).

The standard is Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel. Most hire cars are new enough to drive in free. If yours is an older diesel, check the plate before you drive into the centre.

GOV.UK says any charge must be paid by 11:59pm on the sixth day after you drive in. A penalty goes to the hire firm first, which will pass it on with an admin fee.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge

The bridge is one of Bristol’s landmarks, and driving over it is part of the visit for many families. It costs £1 per crossing, and payment is contactless only, by card or phone (Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust).

There is no cash option, so have a card ready at the barrier. The bridge also has a weight limit of 4 tonnes and a maximum width of 2.4 metres at the toll barriers.

A loaded 7 seater sits well inside both limits. Only an unusually wide vehicle would need a second look.

Over the Severn for free

Both Severn crossings into Wales went toll-free on 17 December 2018 (GOV.UK).

Older guides may still mention a Severn toll. There is nothing to pay, so a day in Cardiff or the Wye Valley costs only fuel.

Paperwork for a UK hire

Hire firms will want your photocard driving licence. Some also ask for a DVLA check code so they can see your licence record. You can create one online in a few minutes (GOV.UK).

The code only lasts a short time, so create it shortly before you travel. Child seat rules are the usual UK ones: children use a child seat until they are 12 or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK).

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. A beach holiday in the West Country adds windbreaks and wetsuits to the pile.

Getting more for less from a Bristol 7 Seater

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Pay any Clean Air Zone charge yourself. £9 on time is far cheaper than a penalty plus a hire firm admin fee.
  • Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat. If you are coming home from holiday, your own seats may already be with you.
  • Book early with free cancellation. Summer weekends to the West Country bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
