Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Stansted Airport. Cambridge bus gate fines, Dart Charge costs and deadlines, DVLA check codes and UK child seat rules.
Driving into Cambridge? Its bus gates are camera enforced, and a 7 seater is not exempt. Read the section below before you follow the sat nav into the city.
London Stansted handled more than 30 million passengers in 2025 for the first time in its history, with Dublin and Edinburgh among its top destinations (CAPA).
That makes Stansted a busy arrival point for families flying in from Scotland and Ireland, as well as those flying home from holidays in Europe. From the airport, the M11 runs north to Cambridge and south to the M25, and both routes come with charges that are easy to miss.
Cambridge bus gates
Cambridge uses cameras to enforce its bus lanes and bus gates. A car that drives through one gets a penalty of £70, cut to £35 if paid within 21 days. Leave it unpaid for 28 days and it rises to £105 (Cambridgeshire County Council).
There are eight bus gates, including Regent Street, Bridge Street, Silver Street and Mill Road. Most run 24 hours a day.
The exemptions cover public transport and vehicles with eight or more passenger seats. A 7 seater does not count, so the gates apply to you just as they would to a small hatchback.
How to visit Cambridge in a 7 seater
Sat navs do not always warn about bus gates. The safest plan is to park on the edge of the city and take a bus or walk in, rather than driving into the centre.
On a hire car, the penalty notice goes to the hire firm first. It will pass it on, usually with an admin fee, which can mean you lose the 21-day discount.
The Dartford Crossing
Heading south to Kent from Stansted usually means the M25 and the Dartford Crossing. The Dart Charge for a car is £3.50, or £2.80 with a pre-pay account, and crossings between 10pm and 6am are free (National Highways).
There are no booths. You must pay by midnight the day after you cross (GOV.UK).

Paperwork for a UK hire
Hire firms will want your photocard driving licence. Some also ask for a DVLA check code so they can see your licence record. You can create one online in a few minutes (GOV.UK).
If you are flying in from Ireland on an Irish licence, check the hire firm’s rules first. Child seat rules are the usual UK ones: children use a child seat until they are 12 or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK).
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Budget airline cabin bags squeeze into the gaps far better than hard cases.
Paying less for a 7 Seater at Stansted
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Pay charges yourself, on time. A missed Dart Charge or a Cambridge bus gate penalty costs more once a hire firm admin fee is added.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat. If you are coming home from holiday, your own seats may already be with you.
- Book early with free cancellation. School holidays and bank holiday weekends bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
