7 Seater Car Hire Pisa Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Pisa Airport. Italian child seat law, the under-four alarm rule for hire cars, ZTL fines in Tuscany and UK licence rules.

Travelling with a child under four? Italian law requires an extra alarm device on their car seat in an Italian-registered car. Read the child seat section below before you book.

Pisa Airport handled almost 6 million passengers in 2025, its best result ever, and London is one of its top five routes (Toscana Aeroporti).

Most UK families landing at Pisa are heading for villas in the Tuscan hills. A 7 seater suits that well. Italy’s driving rules, though, differ from home in ways that matter more with children on board.

Italy’s child seat rules

Italian law requires a child restraint for every child under 1.50 m tall (Codice della Strada, art. 172). That is stricter than the UK, where children can stop using a seat at 135 cm or 12 years old (GOV.UK).

So a 10 or 11 year old who no longer needs a booster at home will probably need one in Italy.

The anti-abandonment alarm for under-fours

The same law requires drivers of cars registered in Italy to use an anti-abandonment alarm when carrying a child under four in a car seat. The device warns the driver if a child is left in the car.

A hire car collected at Pisa will almost always be Italian-registered, so the rule applies to you. Fines for breaking the child seat rules run from about £71 to £284 (€83 to €332).

If you are bringing your own seat for a toddler, check whether it has a built-in alarm. If not, ask the hire firm for a seat that does, or buy a separate alarm before you travel.

ZTL zones: the fine that arrives later

Many Italian towns, Florence among them, have historic centres you cannot drive into without a permit. GOV.UK says these zones are marked with ZTL in black on a yellow background, and cameras photograph cars that pass without a pass (GOV.UK).

The fine goes to the hire firm, which passes it on with an admin fee. It can arrive long after you get home.

In a 7 seater, the answer is simple. Park outside the old town and walk in. If your hotel is inside a ZTL, ask whether it can register your number plate with the council before you arrive.

Licences and border checks

GOV.UK says you can drive in Italy on a UK photocard licence. Hire firms can be stricter on age and experience, and some ask for an International Driving Permit.

Italy is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the airport. You may need to give fingerprints and a photo on arrival (GOV.UK).

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Tuscan hill villages have tight streets, so do not oversize if you do not need to.

Spending less on a 7 Seater in Tuscany

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Stay out of ZTL zones. One wrong turn can mean a fine plus an admin fee from the hire firm.
  • Count child seats against Italian rules. Children under 1.50 m need one, and under-fours also need an alarm.
  • Book early with free cancellation. July and August see the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
