7 Seater Car Hire Naples Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Naples Airport. The November 2026 runway closure, Amalfi Coast plate rules, ZTL cameras and Vesuvius tickets.

Naples Airport is due to close for runway resurfacing from 1 to 30 November 2026, with flights moving to Salerno and Rome. If you travel that month, book your 7 seater at the airport you will actually land at.

Naples Airport handled 13,271,522 passengers in 2025, up 4.9% on the year before (ItaliaVola). That makes Capodichino the busiest airport in mainland southern Italy (Quotidiano.net). UK links run deep, and 2025 marked 25 years of flights between Naples and London Stansted (GESAC).

The airport has its own exit on the Tangenziale, the city’s toll ring road (Tangenziale di Napoli). From there, Pompeii and Vesuvius are an easy family day out.

The November 2026 closure

Naples Airport has a single runway, and it needs resurfacing (TravelExtra). The airport is set to close from 1 to 30 November 2026, though the work could finish early. About a third of flights will move to Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport (Napolike). Most other airlines will fly to Rome instead, or suspend Naples flights and reroute passengers via Rome (TravelExtra).

Salerno is about 70 km from Naples, roughly an hour by road (The Flight Club). Check which airport your airline has moved you to before you book a car, because a booking at Naples is no help if you land in Salerno.

Amalfi Coast plate rules

On the SS163 coast road between Vietri sul Mare and Positano, traffic is limited by number plate from 10am to 6pm. On odd dates, plates ending in an odd number are banned, and on even dates, even plates (Distretto Costa d’Amalfi).

In 2026, the rule applies every day around Easter and the late April holidays, and throughout August and September. From June to October it also covers weekends and public holidays (Salerno Notizie). Hire cars are not on the list of exempt vehicles. If you have a booked stay on the coast, you may drive to it on your arrival and departure days (Salerno Notizie).

The road is only about 7 metres wide for two-way traffic. Parking in Positano starts at about £8.50 (€10) an hour, and larger cars pay more (Positano.com). Check the last digit of your plate at pickup, and on a banned day use the ferry or bus instead.

ZTL zones and cameras

GOV.UK warns that many Italian historic centres need a pass to drive in, marked by signs reading ZTL in black on yellow (GOV.UK). Naples has seven of these zones, and driving in without a permit costs about £68 to £285 (€80 to €335), plus notification costs (SicurAuto).

Cameras at more than 20 gates read number plates automatically. Free park and ride at Brin and Colli Aminei gets you into the centre without the risk (Napolike).

Vesuvius and Pompeii with a full car

Tickets for the Vesuvius crater path are sold online only (Vesuvius National Park). There is no parking at the top. Cars stop at car parks lower down run by Ercolano council, and a shuttle takes you up (Napolike).

Pompeii now caps visitors at 20,000 a day with timed entry, and every ticket carries the visitor’s name (Parco Archeologico di Pompei). Book all seven in advance with the right names.

GOV.UK says thefts from parked cars are common in Italy, and advises not to leave luggage in the car, even in the boot (GOV.UK). Drop the cases at your accommodation before any sightseeing stop.

Italian road rules

A UK photocard licence is accepted in Italy (GOV.UK). The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g per litre, and zero for new drivers. A reflective vest and a warning triangle are compulsory (Your Europe).

Italy’s highway code reform, in force since December 2024, raised the fine for using a phone at the wheel to about £213 to £850 (€250 to €1,000), along with a licence suspension of 15 days to two months (Brocardi).

Children under 1.50 metres must use a child restraint. For children under four, cars registered in Italy must also carry an alarm that warns if a child is left in the car (Brocardi). Hire cars collected in Italy are normally Italian-registered, so ask for the device with any child seat.

Italy is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies when you land. Check the latest entry rules on GOV.UK.

Will seven cases fit?

A large suitcase takes 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters still have about 340 to 350 litres of boot (Auto Express).

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need

For a full car with big cases, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats with more space. On the narrow roads of the coast, though, a shorter car is easier to place.

Collecting the car at Naples Airport

The airport’s service charter lists car hire in the terminal, and its map shows a shuttle bus to the rental area (GESAC service charter). Your voucher says where to go.

A metro station at the airport is under construction, due to open around 2027 (Railway Gazette).

Spending less on a Naples 7 Seater

  • Stay out of the ZTL. One camera fine can wipe out what you saved on the hire, so park and ride into the centre.
  • Plan around the plate rule. A banned day on the coast road means a wasted drive, so check the calendar first.
  • Look past the daily rate. A low price can hide a big excess, a high deposit, a poor fuel policy or a fee for a second driver.
  • Book with free cancellation. If your November flight moves to Salerno or Rome, you can rebook without losing money.
