7 Seater Car Hire Bologna Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Bologna Airport. The city’s 30 km/h limit, ZTL cameras and car-free T Days, the Marconi Express and Italian child seat law.

Most of Bologna has a 30 km/h limit, and police enforce it with fines that start at about £25 (€29.40). Keep an eye on the speedometer once you leave the ring roads.

Bologna Airport handled 11,126,959 passengers in 2025, its first year above 11 million, up 3.4% (Bologna Convention Bureau). Growth carried on into 2026, with 5,485,241 passengers in the first half, up 3.6% (Bologna Airport).

London Heathrow is among the airport’s most popular destinations (Bologna Airport). With the Adriatic beaches and Tuscany both within reach, a 7 seater keeps the whole family together.

Bologna’s 30 km/h city limit

Bologna’s 30 km/h limit covers most of the city, and fines have applied since 16 January 2024. The ring roads and several main roads stay at 50 km/h, while the tangenziale bypass is outside the zone (Il Resto del Carlino).

Fines start at 36 km/h, after a 5 km/h tolerance. Driving at 36 to 45 km/h brings a fine from about £25 (€29.40), and 46 to 75 km/h a fine from about £103 (€121.10) plus 3 licence points (Il Resto del Carlino).

ZTL cameras and car-free T Days

The historic centre is a ZTL every day from 7am to 8pm, and some streets are closed to traffic around the clock (Bologna Welcome). The Sirio camera system watches the entry gates.

On T Days, from 8am on Saturday to 10pm on Sunday, all motor vehicles are barred from the central T zone (SicurAUTO). Guests of hotels and B&Bs inside the wider ZTL can drive in, so ask your host to register the number plate. Rules for the central T zone are stricter, so check with your host before you arrive (Bologna Welcome).

The Marconi Express and the city

The Marconi Express monorail links the airport with Bologna Centrale station in about 7 minutes, running from 5.40am to midnight (Marconi Express).

For a city day, the easier plan is often to leave the 7 seater at your accommodation and take the monorail or a bus into the centre. Save the car for days out across the region.

Motorways and future works

The A14 runs from Bologna towards Rimini and the Adriatic coast. In July 2026, a framework protocol was signed for a €2.5 billion Bologna road package that includes a fourth lane on the A14 between Bologna San Lazzaro and the Ravenna branch, with the first works planned for 2027 (Il Resto del Carlino).

Italian motorways charge by distance: take a ticket on the way in and pay as you leave. The limit is 130 km/h, or 110 km/h in rain (360 Garda Life).

Italian rules for UK drivers

A UK photocard licence is accepted in Italy (GOV.UK). The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g per litre, and zero for new drivers. A reflective vest and a warning triangle are compulsory (Your Europe).

Children under 1.50 metres need a child restraint, and in Italian-registered cars, children under four also need an anti-abandonment alarm (Brocardi). Ask for one when you book child seats.

Italy is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies when you land (GOV.UK).

Seven people and the cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With all seven seats up, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot (Auto Express).

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater.

Collecting the car at Bologna Airport

Your voucher shows where your firm’s desk is and where to collect the car. The airport is planning a multi-year expansion of the terminal and boarding areas (Bologna Airport), so allow a little extra time at drop-off.

Spending less on a Bologna 7 Seater

  • Watch the 30 km/h limit. Even a small speeding fine adds up across a week of short city trips.
  • Avoid the T Days. Plan weekend sightseeing on foot, and keep the car for trips out of the city.
  • Compare the full price. The excess, deposit, fuel policy and second driver fees all change the total.
  • Book early for summer. Beach weeks on the Adriatic fill the fleets, so lock in a cancellable rate.
