7 Seater Car Hire Cork Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Cork Airport. The N8 toll near Fermoy, Park by Phone in the city, the Spike Island ferry and Ireland’s 60 km/h rural limit.

Since 7 February 2025, the default limit on many of Ireland’s rural local roads has been 60 km/h, down from 80. The round black and white sign with no number now means 60, so ease off on the narrow back roads.

Cork Airport handled 3,465,921 passengers in 2025, the busiest year in its 64-year history and 13% up on 2024 (Travel Extra). UK routes led much of the growth, with Bristol up 37% and Liverpool up 31% (Travel Extra).

The first half of 2026 brought 1,619,373 passengers, 1% down on the record first half of 2025, though UK regional traffic was up 7% in June (Cork Airport). For a family of seven heading for West Cork or Kerry, a 7 seater from the airport is the easy way to travel together.

Ireland’s new 60 km/h rural limit

On 7 February 2025, the default limit on many rural local roads dropped from 80 km/h to 60 km/h. The round black and white sign with no number now means 60 km/h or below (RSA).

Motorways stay at 120 km/h and national roads at 100 km/h (RSA). Speeds and distances are all in kilometres, so set the car’s display to km/h before you leave the car park.

The N8 toll near Fermoy

The main toll on the drive north is the M8 Rathcormac to Fermoy bypass, with its plaza near Watergrasshill. A car pays about £1.95 (€2.30) in 2026, by cash or card, though cards are not taken in the Express lane (TII).

The Jack Lynch Tunnel under the River Lee is not on the national list of toll roads (TII), so crossing the city to Cobh or Kinsale costs nothing extra.

Parking in Cork city

On-street parking in the city is paid through the free Cork City Park by Phone app or with a parking disc from a local shop. Nothing goes on the dashboard when you pay by app (Cork City Council).

The council warns that it uses no QR code stickers on meters, so any you see are fraudulent (Cork City Council). Download the app before you arrive.

Cobh and the Spike Island ferry

The ferry to Spike Island leaves from Kennedy Pier in Cobh and takes about 15 minutes (Spike Island). Boats do sell out at weekends and in peak season, and they leave on time without waiting for latecomers, so book online (Spike Island).

There is no parking on Kennedy Pier, and clamping is enforced. The Five Foot Way car park is free and about 10 minutes’ walk away, so allow 20 minutes to park and reach the pier (Spike Island).

Killarney and Kerry

Killarney National Park is an easy day out from Cork, and parking within the park is free. The Ross Castle car parks are open around the clock, while the large Muckross car park near Muckross School House is open from 8am to 9pm (National Parks of Ireland).

Kerry’s back roads are narrow, often with no hard shoulder, and you may meet tractors or animals (RSA). In a wide 7 seater, take the bends slowly and pull in to let others pass.

Irish rules for UK drivers

UK visitors can drive in Ireland on their UK licence, with no International Driving Permit needed (gov.ie). Hire firms set their own licence rules, so check yours. The drink-drive limit is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, and 20 mg for learner and professional drivers (RSA).

Children must use a child seat or booster until they reach 150 cm or 36 kg (HSE). Holding a phone while driving is illegal, and penalty points apply to foreign licence holders too (RSA).

British citizens travel under the Common Travel Area and need no passport by law, though some airlines insist on one (GOV.UK). Check with your airline before you fly.

Seven people and the cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With all seven seats up, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot (Auto Express).

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space. On West Cork’s lanes, a shorter car is easier to place.

Collecting the car at Cork Airport

The rental offices are inside the terminal, and the airport directs you to your hire firm for anything else (Cork Airport). Your voucher shows where to find your firm’s desk and car.

A new security screening area on a mezzanine floor is due to open in December 2026 (Cork Airport), so allow a little extra time.

Saving money on a Cork 7 Seater

  • Compare the full price. Check the excess and deposit against the fuel terms and second driver fees.
