7 Seater Car Hire Ireland

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at airports across Ireland. The 150 cm child seat rule, the M50 barrier-free toll, km/h limits and narrow Kerry roads.

Using the M50 around Dublin? There is no toll booth, and the bill follows by number plate. Read the tolls section below before you drive off.

Dublin Airport handled a record 36.4 million passengers in 2025, and London Heathrow was its busiest route (Dublin Airport). Ireland’s statistics office counts UK routes as the biggest single market for Irish airports (CSO).

Ireland feels familiar to UK drivers. You drive on the left, and British citizens do not legally need a passport to enter. The differences are kilometres and a stricter child seat rule.

Where to hire a 7 Seater in Ireland

Irish airports handled a record 43.5 million passengers in 2025, according to the Central Statistics Office. Dublin takes most of them, but the regional airports put you far closer to the west coast. Where we have a full airport guide, the name links to it, and we add new guides regularly.

  • Dublin. 36.4 million passengers. Most UK flights land here, and the M50 links you to every motorway in the country.
  • Cork. 3.5 million. For West Cork and the Beara Peninsula.
  • Shannon. 2.2 million. The closest airport to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren.
  • Ireland West Airport Knock. 945,862. Mayo and Connemara in the west.
  • Kerry. 440,180. Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula sit close by.
  • Donegal. 55,116 (CSO data). A small airport on the coast for the far north west.

Heading for Donegal or the north? Belfast International and Belfast City are often the easier option, and both are on our UK page.

Getting in: the Common Travel Area

Ireland and the UK share the Common Travel Area. GOV.UK says British citizens are not legally required to show a passport to enter Ireland, but some airlines and ferry firms insist on one (GOV.UK).

Ireland is outside Schengen, so the EU Entry/Exit System does not apply. That means no fingerprint queue at the airport.

Child seats: the 150 cm rule

In the UK, children can stop using a child seat at 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first (GOV.UK).

Ireland sets the bar higher. All children under 150 cm or 36 kg must use a child restraint suited to their height and weight, in any car (RSA). Many children aged 10 or 11 who have stopped using a booster at home need one again in Ireland.

The M50 barrier-free toll

The M50 around Dublin has no barrier to stop at. Cameras read your number plate as you pass, and the bill follows, with charges set by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

On a hire car, ask at the desk how the M50 is handled. Hire firms often add the toll to your bill, sometimes with a fee.

Speed limits and drink driving

Speed limits are in km/h. The Road Safety Authority lists 120 km/h on motorways (RSA), and many rural local roads dropped from 80 km/h to 60 km/h, about 37 mph, in February 2025 (gov.ie).

Cross into Northern Ireland and the signs switch back to mph, with no border checks (nidirect).

Ireland allows 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood for fully licensed drivers (RSA), against 80 mg in the rest of the UK outside Scotland (GOV.UK). Scottish drivers will find it the same as home.

Narrow roads in a big car

On the Ring of Kerry, a 179 km loop, tour coaches all run anticlockwise because they struggle to pass on the narrow sections (Ring of Kerry).

The Conor Pass on the Dingle peninsula has single-lane stretches and a weight limit of two tonnes (Conor Pass). Some large 7 seaters come close to that, so check the weight in the handbook first.

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. On Kerry’s back roads, a smaller 7 seater is easier to pass in.

Getting a better 7 Seater deal in Ireland

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Ask how the M50 is billed. A toll passed on with a fee costs more than one you settle yourself.
  • Count child seats against the 150 cm rule. Hire firms usually charge per seat, so bringing your own can be cheaper.
  • Book early with free cancellation. Summer and school holidays bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
