7 Seater Car Hire Australia

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Australian airports. Driving on the left, cashless tolls in Sydney and Melbourne, kangaroos at dusk and the free eVisitor for UK travellers.

Sydney and Melbourne toll roads take no cash. In New South Wales you have just 72 hours after a toll trip to pay before extra fees are added, so ask your hire firm how tolls are billed.

Australia welcomed 758,300 UK visitors in 2025, up 18%, making the UK its third largest market (Tourism Research Australia).

Australians drive on the left, like the UK, which makes a 7 seater road trip easier than almost anywhere else long haul. The distances are the hard part, along with the cashless tolls.

Where to hire a 7 Seater in Australia

Sydney Airport handled about 42.5 million passengers in 2025, including a record 17.2 million international travellers (Sydney Airport). Domestic figures for the other main airports come from the government’s transport statistics bureau (BITRE). Where we have a full airport guide, the name links to it, and we add new guides regularly.

  • Sydney. 42.5 million passengers. For the Blue Mountains and the New South Wales coast.
  • Melbourne. 24.6 million domestic passengers. For the Great Ocean Road and the Yarra Valley.
  • Brisbane. 17.6 million domestic passengers. For the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
  • Perth. 9.4 million domestic passengers. For Margaret River and the south west.

Sydney’s second airport, Western Sydney International, opens to passengers on 25 October 2026 (Prime Minister of Australia).

Your UK licence and the eVisitor

GOV.UK says you can drive on a UK photocard licence while you remain a temporary visitor, and that driving laws differ in each state and territory (GOV.UK). Visitors can drive on an overseas licence for up to 6 months in New South Wales and Victoria, and 3 months in the Northern Territory (Austroads).

British citizens need a visa to visit. The eVisitor is free to apply for (GOV.UK) and allows stays of up to 3 months per entry (Home Affairs).

Child seats by age

New South Wales sets out the rules by age. Babies under 6 months travel rear-facing, children up to 4 use a harness seat, children aged 4 to 7 use a harness seat or an approved booster, and older children stay in a booster until the adult belt fits. Children under 4 cannot sit in the front of a car with two or more rows (NSW Government).

In a 7 seater, that leaves plenty of room to keep small children in the back rows. Seats must meet the Australian standard AS/NZS 1754, so a UK seat may not be legal there.

Speed, phones and drink driving

Where no sign is posted, New South Wales limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h elsewhere (NSW Government). Fully licensed drivers, including overseas visitors, must stay below 0.05 blood alcohol (NSW Government).

Using a phone at the wheel in New South Wales costs about £207 (AUD 423), and the driver is fined the same for each unbelted passenger (The Leader). Since March 2026, the state’s mobile phone and seat belt cameras check traffic in both directions. With seven people aboard, check every belt before you pull away.

Cashless tolls

Toll roads in New South Wales are electronic only. If you drive one without an account, you have 72 hours to pay or set up a pass before a payment demand adds extra fees (NSW Government).

In Melbourne, you can buy a pass before you travel or up to 3 days after (Transport Victoria). A Melbourne visitor’s pass does not work on Sydney roads (Linkt), so ask your hire firm how its cars pay before you set off.

Long distances and wildlife

Kangaroos and other animals are most likely on the roads at dawn and dusk. Slow down, brake in a controlled way and do not swerve (Transport for NSW). Victoria advises a break every two hours on long drives (Transport Victoria).

GOV.UK notes that hire car insurance often excludes unsurfaced roads. In remote areas, carry water and tell someone your plans. If the car breaks down, stay with it (GOV.UK).

Bushfire season

GOV.UK says bushfire risk is highest in spring and summer, especially from November to February, and advises downloading your state’s warning app (GOV.UK). In January 2026, bushfires in Victoria damaged roads, and repairs continued on routes such as the Murchison-Violet Town Road, a key detour for the Hume Highway (Premier of Victoria).

Seven people and the bags

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot (Auto Express).

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a long road trip with a case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater.

Paying less for a 7 Seater in Australia

  • Sort the tolls early. Paying within the deadline avoids extra fees on top of the toll itself.
  • Bring a local child seat plan. UK seats may not meet the Australian standard, so price hire seats into the total.
  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Deposit, excess, fuel policy and extra driver fees all sit outside the headline price.
  • Book early for summer. The Australian school holidays fall over Christmas, so lock in a cancellable rate well ahead.
