Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Sydney Airport. NSW child seat rules, seatbelt and phone camera fines in GBP, cashless tolls and UK licence rules.
Bringing your own child seats from the UK? They are not legal in New South Wales. Read the child seat section below before you pack them.
Sydney Airport handled more than 42.54 million passengers in 2025, including a record 17.17 million international passengers (Sydney Airport).
Australia drives on the left, so a UK driver feels at home quickly. The differences are in the detail, above all the child seat rules and the cameras. In a 7 seater full of family, both can cost you money, and so can the toll roads.
Your UK child seats will not do
All child restraints used in New South Wales must meet the Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 1754 (NSW Government). Seats sold in the UK are built to European standards, so they do not qualify.
That means hiring seats or buying them locally. With several children, book them with the car and check the daily price, because it adds up over a long trip.
The age rules
NSW sets its rules by age:
- Up to 6 months: rear-facing seat
- 6 months to 4 years: rear-facing or forward-facing seat with a harness
- 4 to 7 years: forward-facing seat with a harness, or an approved booster
- 7 years and over: adult seatbelt if 145 cm or taller, otherwise a booster or harness
Children under four cannot sit in the front row of a car with two or more rows. Children aged four to seven can only sit in front if every back seat is taken by other children under seven. In a 7 seater, that usually means everyone young rides in the back two rows.
Cameras that see inside the car
NSW uses cameras that detect drivers holding a mobile phone and anyone not wearing a seatbelt. The fine is A$423, about £222, rising to A$562, about £295, in a school zone. Each unbelted passenger brings another A$423 fine (Wellington Times).
With seven people on board, one child slipping a shoulder belt off can cost more than the car hire for the day. Check every belt before you set off.

Toll roads with no booths
All Sydney toll roads are cashless. You need a toll account or a pass, and you can set up a temporary pass before you travel or up to 72 hours afterwards (NSW Government).
On a hire car, the hire firm will tell you how tolls are paid. Hire firms usually bill them back to you, often with a fee per day or per toll. Ask at the desk, because unpaid tolls go to the registered owner with extra fees added.
Driving out of the city
Sydney is the start of plenty of road trips, to the Blue Mountains or along the coast. On country roads, Transport for NSW warns that animals are harder to see at sunrise and sunset (Transport for NSW).
Its advice is to brake in a careful, controlled way and never swerve. That is hard to remember with a kangaroo in the headlights, so drive more slowly at dawn and dusk.
Licences and visiting
UK visitors can drive in NSW on their UK licence for up to six months (NRMA). Hire firms set their own rules on age and experience, so check those too.
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each after a long-haul flight, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 seater.

Spending less on a 7 Seater in New South Wales
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Toll fees, child seats, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Budget for local child seats. UK seats are not legal in NSW, so price the hire seats in from the start.
- Ask how tolls are billed. A daily toll fee suits heavy driving. Per-toll billing is better if you rarely use the motorways.
- Book early with free cancellation. The Australian summer and school holidays bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
