7 Seater Car Hire Lisbon Airport

Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Lisbon Airport. One-way Tagus bridge tolls in GBP, Sintra parking and buses, Portuguese child seat and ID rules.

Heading to Sintra? Tour coaches are banned from the old town and parking near the palaces is scarce. Read the section below before you drive up.

Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport handled 36.1 million passengers in 2025, up 2.9% on the year before (Essential Business).

Families who hire a 7 seater in Lisbon tend to stay outside the city, along the coast at Cascais or south over the Tagus. That makes the bridges and Sintra the two places where a little planning saves time and money.

The Tagus bridges charge one way only

Both bridges over the Tagus charge tolls only in the south to north direction, into Lisbon. The 25 de Abril bridge costs about £1.84 (€2.15) for a car, and the Vasco da Gama bridge about £2.82 (€3.30) (Postal).

Heading south to the beaches of the Setúbal peninsula costs nothing. You pay on the way back.

The toll plazas have separate lanes for electronic Via Verde tags. Do not use a Via Verde lane unless your hire car has a tag. Ask at the desk whether one is fitted and what it costs.

Sintra without the stress

Sintra’s palaces are among the most visited sights in Portugal, and the town has tightened its traffic rules. Tour coaches are banned from the historic centre and sent to car parks on the edge of town (The Portugal Post).

Private cars can still park near some monuments, but spaces are scarce and expensive. The easier option is the Lourel park on the edge of town, with 540 free spaces.

From there, Carris Metropolitana buses 434 and 435 run to Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, among other sights. They run every 15 to 20 minutes in peak season, with tickets of about £1.71 to £2.56 (€2 to €3).

For a family of seven, that is far easier than climbing the narrow hill roads in a big car and hunting for a space at the top.

Portugal’s rules for families

All children under 12 and shorter than 135 cm must use an approved child restraint (DECO PROteste). That is close to the UK rule, so most families need the same seats as at home.

The motorway limit is 120 km/h, and the drink-drive limit is 0.5 g per litre of blood, lower than in England and Wales (The Portugal News).

GOV.UK says you must show photo ID if a police officer asks, and that applies while driving (GOV.UK). Keep your passport with you.

Portugal is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the airport (GOV.UK).

Seven people, seven cases

A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

Bar chart of 7 seater boot space with all seats in use: Peugeot 5008 348 litres, Skoda Kodiaq 340, Kia Sorento 179, previous Peugeot 5008 167, Volkswagen Touran 137, all short of the 560 to 770 litres seven large suitcases need
Boot figures: Auto Express, Carbuyer. Suitcase volumes: Markenkoffer.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Lisbon’s old quarters are steep and narrow, so park outside them and use trams or taxis.

Paying less for a Lisbon 7 Seater

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
  • Ask about toll tags. A Via Verde tag saves queues at the bridges, but check the daily cost first.
  • Use the Sintra buses. Free parking at Lourel and a short bus ride beat paying for a scarce space at the top.
  • Book early with free cancellation. Summer and Easter bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
