Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Porto Airport. Camera-only tolls near the city, the N222 through the Douro, old town access zones and the airport metro.
Several motorways around Porto have no toll booths, only overhead gantries. Ask at the desk how your hire car pays, because an unpaid toll is fined at five times its value or more.
Porto Airport handled a record 16.9 million passengers in 2025, up 6.3% on 2024 (ANA). Growth continued into 2026, with 8.5 million passengers in the first six months, up 7.0%. The UK was the top country for traffic to and from Portuguese airports over the same period (HR Portugal).
The airport sits 11 km north west of the city centre (SKYbrary). For a family of seven heading inland to the Douro or north to the Minho, a 7 seater from the airport saves a lot of train tickets.
Electronic tolls around Porto
Portugal scrapped tolls on several former SCUT motorways from 1 January 2025. The stretches around Porto were left out of that change, including the A41 and the A42 (Observador). From 25 February 2026, heavy goods lorries no longer pay tolls on the A41 ring road. The exemption covers lorries only, not cars (Renascença).
These roads charge by gantry, with no booths. Portugal’s official toll site says hire firms must fit each car with a toll device and sign it up to a payment system, and you can usually choose to use it when you collect the car. Miss a payment and the fine is at least five times the toll, and never less than about £21 (€25) (Infraestruturas de Portugal).
At pickup, ask whether the car has a toll device and how the charges reach you. GOV.UK also tells drivers to understand the toll system before they set off (GOV.UK).
Driving the Douro Valley
Peso da Régua is about 120 km east of Porto, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes via the A4 and A24 (Frommer’s). From there, the N222 to Pinhão runs 27 km with 93 bends. A 2015 study rated it the best driving road in the world (Diário de Notícias).
It is a different road in a loaded 7 seater. Further east, the government has set aside about £10.2 million (€12 million) to rebuild 16 km of the same road, which has frequent accidents and is the only route for the wine lorries (ECO). Take it slowly, and swap drivers at Régua if the bends get to anyone.
Closer to Porto, Braga is 50 km north (Frommer’s) and Aveiro is 68 km south (Frommer’s). Both make easy day trips with the whole family.
Driving in Porto itself
Parts of Porto’s historic centre are conditioned access zones, where residents and traders have priority and other drivers can only enter at set times, sometimes for a fee (Porto council edital 830/2019). The city publishes a map of the zones. The streets around the Ribeira are steep and narrow, and busy with people on foot.
The easier plan is to park outside the centre and ride in. The airport is on metro Line E, the violet line, with trains every 20 to 30 minutes (ANA). If your accommodation is in the old town, ask it where guests can park before you arrive.
Expect roadworks too. The new Rosa metro line under the city centre is now due in March 2027 (Observador).

Portuguese road rules
A UK photocard licence is valid in Portugal, while holders of an old paper licence may need an international driving permit (GOV.UK).
Children under 12 and under 135 cm must use a child seat. A child up to age 3 may sit in the front only in a rear-facing seat with the passenger airbag switched off (DECO Proteste).
The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g per litre, and 0.2 g for new and professional drivers (ETSC). A warning triangle and an approved high-visibility vest are compulsory, and not carrying them can cost about £51 to £255 (€60 to €300) (Postal). Check both are in the car before you leave.
Portugal is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System applies when you land. Check the current entry rules on GOV.UK.
Room for seven and their cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With all seven seats up, the roomiest common 7 seaters have about 340 to 350 litres of boot to spare (Auto Express).

If everyone has a big case, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats with more space. An 8 or 9 seater is the alternative.
Picking up at Porto Airport
The airport lists six firms with desks in the terminal, before security (ANA). If your firm is not on that list, check your voucher for where to collect the car.

Cutting the cost of a Porto 7 Seater
- Ask how tolls are billed. Knowing at pickup how the charges reach you avoids a surprise on your card weeks later.
- Add up the extras. Check the excess, deposit, fuel terms and extra driver fees before you choose.
- Bring child seats from home. Daily charges for each seat soon add up on a long trip.
- Book early for the harvest. The Douro grape harvest mostly falls in September and October, so lock in a cancellable rate and search again later.
