Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Dalaman Airport. The Göcek Tunnel toll, the 1968 IDP rule, turtle beach closures and drives to Fethiye and Kalkan.
Driving to Fethiye? The quickest route goes through the Göcek Tunnel, which has a small toll. Read the section below, and check your licence paperwork before you fly.
The UK is by far the biggest market for this corner of Turkey. Muğla province welcomed 1,455,592 British visitors in 2025, 42% of all its foreign tourists and more than three times the next country (Haberler).
Dalaman Airport handled 5.64 million passengers that year (NTV). Many UK families are heading for a villa around Fethiye or Kalkan, where a 7 seater beats a string of taxis.
Your licence: an IDP is needed
GOV.UK says you need a 1968 International Driving Permit, or a UK driving licence notarised in Turkish, to drive in Turkey. The 1949 IDP is no longer accepted, and you must get the IDP before you travel (GOV.UK).
Your passport needs at least 150 days of validity on arrival. UK visitors can stay 90 days in any 180 without a visa (GOV.UK). Turkey is outside Schengen, so the EU Entry/Exit System does not apply at Dalaman.
Always carry your passport when you drive. GOV.UK warns there are police checkpoints on main roads.
Where Dalaman families drive
Approximate road distances from the airport, measured on OpenStreetMap routing:
- Göcek: about 26 km, 35 to 40 minutes
- Dalyan: about 32 km, 45 minutes
- Fethiye: about 56 km, an hour
- Ölüdeniz: about 67 km, 1 hour 20 minutes
- Marmaris: about 97 km, 1 hour 35 minutes
- Kalkan: about 128 km, just over 2 hours
- Kaş: about 155 km, 2 hours 30 minutes
- Saklıkent Gorge: about 101 km, 2 hours
Times assume clear roads. On a summer Saturday changeover day, allow longer.
The Göcek Tunnel toll
The main road to Fethiye, the D400, runs through the Göcek Tunnel, which has a toll booth (Cumhuriyet).
The car toll rose to TRY 75, about £1.16, in January 2026 (Muğla Gazetesi). The operator’s contract has been extended to May 2030, so expect the toll to stay (Sözcü).
There is a free alternative over the old Göcek hill road, which adds only a few minutes (Memurlar). It is a winding mountain road, though. With a full 7 seater and a tired family after the flight, the tunnel is worth the toll.
Ask at the hire desk how the toll is paid. Some cars have an electronic tag, while booths may take cash or card.

Turtle beaches close at night
İztuzu beach near Dalyan is a loggerhead turtle nesting site. It is 10 to 15 minutes by car from Dalyan, and access is restricted at night from 20:00 to 08:00 (GoTürkiye).
The rules are strict. From May to the end of September, nesting beaches such as İztuzu and Patara are closed at night, and taking a vehicle onto them is banned. The fine for individuals is TRY 699,245, about £10,780 (Habertürk).
Plan a daytime visit, park in the marked areas and keep away from the marked nests.
Wildfire season
GOV.UK says wildfires happen frequently in Turkey during summer. You could be fined or jailed for lighting any fire or throwing away a cigarette in risk areas such as woodland (GOV.UK).
The pine forests around Göcek and Marmaris are exactly that kind of area. Keep a full tank and follow local instructions if roads close. Report fires on 112.
Speed limits and child seats
Turkey drives on the right. Cars are limited to 50 km/h in towns. Outside towns it is 90 km/h on two-way roads and 110 km/h on divided roads (TGRT Haber, Eleman.net). There is no motorway near Dalaman.
A tougher traffic law came in on 27 February 2026 (Bloomberg HT). Speeding fines start at TRY 2,000, about £31, and a phone at the wheel costs TRY 5,000, about £77 (Türkiye Today).
The drink-drive limit for private cars is 0.5 g of alcohol per litre of blood. GOV.UK says police fine drunk drivers and can take your licence for six months.
Children under 150 cm and under 36 kg, roughly age 12, must use a child seat and should sit in the back (CNN Türk). That is stricter than the UK’s 135 cm rule.
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space. If a minivan shows up in your search, it often carries more luggage than a 7 seater SUV.
Picking up at Dalaman Airport
The airport says car hire offices are on the arrivals floor of the terminal and that services run 24 hours (Dalaman Airport). Dalaman has two terminals, so check which one your flight uses (Dalaman Airport).
Some firms based nearby meet you in arrivals instead. Your voucher will say which applies.
Staying further east, around Side, Belek or Alanya? Antalya is the nearer airport, and our Antalya Airport guide covers that coast. For the national rules, see our Turkey guide.
Keeping a Dalaman 7 Seater affordable
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and toll charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Get the IDP before you fly. Without it, the desk can refuse to hand over the car.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a fortnight add up. Bringing your own is often cheaper.
- Book early with free cancellation. Dalaman is a summer-season airport, and 7 seaters go first in July and August. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
