Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Antalya Airport. The 1968 IDP rule, 2026 traffic fines, the 150 cm child seat law, HGS tolls and the drive to Alanya.
Sort your paperwork before you fly. GOV.UK says you need a 1968 International Driving Permit, or a UK licence notarised in Turkish, to drive in Turkey. Read the licence section below.
Antalya Airport handled 39.16 million passengers in 2025 (Anews). Around 1.56 million British visitors arrived in Antalya by air that year, making the UK its third biggest market after Russia and Germany (DHA).
Many UK families never leave the hotel transfer coach. Those who hire a car get the Turquoise Coast on their own terms, from Lara beach to the Roman ruins at Side.
The licence rule that trips people up
This is the point to settle first. GOV.UK says you need a 1968 International Driving Permit, or a UK driving licence notarised in Turkish, to drive in Turkey (GOV.UK).
The older 1949 IDP is no longer accepted. You cannot buy an IDP outside the UK either, so you cannot fix this once you land. Post Office branches in the UK sell the 1968 version.
Your passport needs at least 150 days of validity from the date you arrive, plus a blank page. UK visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa (GOV.UK).
Turkey is outside Schengen, so the EU Entry/Exit System does not apply at Antalya.
Carry your passport in the car
GOV.UK says to always carry your passport, and warns there are several police checkpoints on main roads (GOV.UK). Approach them slowly and follow the officers’ instructions.
GOV.UK also says accidents are common, mainly because of poor or reckless driving, and advises extra care at night. The emergency number is 112.
Antalya 7 Seaters and minivans, compared
One search shows the 7 seaters at Antalya, at the terminal and off the airport, with the full price for each.
Speed limits and the 2026 fines
Turkey drives on the right. The limits for cars (TGRT Haber, Eleman.net):
- Towns: 50 km/h, about 31 mph
- Two-way roads outside towns: 90 km/h, about 56 mph
- Divided roads: 110 km/h, about 68 mph
- Motorways: 120 km/h, about 75 mph, with higher limits signed on some routes
On the D400 coast road, which you will use for most trips from the airport, watch for the drop to 50 km/h each time it passes through a town.
A tougher traffic law came into force on 27 February 2026 (Bloomberg HT). Speeding fines now run in nine bands, from TRY 2,000, about £31, up to TRY 30,000, about £462 (Bengütürk). Using a phone at the wheel costs TRY 5,000, about £77 (Türkiye Today).
The drink-drive limit for private cars is 0.5 g of alcohol per litre of blood. A first offence costs TRY 25,000, about £385, and a six-month licence suspension (Türkiye Gazetesi).
Child seats: the 150 cm rule
Turkey requires a child seat for children under 150 cm and under 36 kg, which is roughly age 12 (CNN Türk). Children should travel in the back.
That is stricter than the UK’s 135 cm rule (GOV.UK). Count heights before you book, because child seats are usually charged per day.
Terminals at Antalya Airport
Antalya has two main terminals and a domestic terminal, linked by free shuttles. From 27 October 2025, all international flights moved to Terminal 2 (Antalya Airport). Check the terminal on your booking before you arrange to meet a hire firm.
A large expansion opened in April 2025, raising capacity from 35 million to 82 million passengers a year (Hürriyet Daily News). The airport lists its car hire firms on its own site (Antalya Airport).
The airport sits northeast of the city, about 20 minutes from the centre by the D400.
Driving the coast
Most families drive east from the airport towards Side and Alanya. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism puts Alanya at 135 km from Antalya (KTB), about two hours or more on the D400.
That will change. A new 122 km Antalya to Alanya motorway broke ground in July 2025, with completion targeted for about 2028. It should cut the trip from around two and a half hours to 36 minutes (Hürriyet).
Tolls and HGS
Turkey’s toll motorways and bridges use HGS, an electronic tag linked to a prepaid account. Unpaid tolls must be settled within 15 days, or fines are added (KGM).
Before a longer trip, ask the hire desk whether the car has an HGS tag and how tolls are charged back to you.
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space. If a minivan shows up in your search results, it often carries more luggage than a 7 seater SUV.
Heading for Fethiye, Göcek or Kalkan instead? Dalaman is the nearer airport, and our Dalaman Airport guide covers that coast. For the national rules, see our Turkey guide.
Paying less for a 7 Seater on the Turquoise Coast
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and toll charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Get the IDP before you fly. Without the right paperwork, the desk can refuse to hand over the car, and your prepaid booking with it.
- Price child seats per day. Hire firms usually charge per seat, and two or three seats over a fortnight add up. Bringing your own is often cheaper.
- Book early with free cancellation. 7 seaters and minivans go first in the school holidays. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
