Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at airports across the USA. Minivan boot space, cashless tolls, the national park surcharge for overseas visitors, ESTA and IDP rules.
Visiting the Grand Canyon or Zion? International visitors now pay a $100 surcharge per adult at 11 of the busiest national parks. One pass covers your whole car. Read the parks section below.
Orlando welcomed 933,500 UK visitors in 2025, more than from any other overseas country except Canada (TravelPulse). The UK is also Greater Miami’s third-largest international market (ANTOR).
A US family trip is where a 7 seater makes the most sense. American minivans carry far more luggage than European cars. The things that catch UK families out are the cashless tolls and the new national park fees.
Where to hire a 7 Seater in the USA
The US has hundreds of airports with rental counters, and 7 seaters (minivans and large SUVs) are standard stock at all the big ones. Passenger numbers are for 2025, from each airport operator. Where we have a full airport guide, the name links to it, and we add new guides regularly.
- Los Angeles (LAX). 73.7 million passengers. For Disneyland and the Pacific Coast Highway.
- Orlando. 57.7 million. The first choice for the theme parks.
- Orlando Sanford. Nearly 3 million passengers a year. North of Orlando, about an hour from Kennedy Space Center and Daytona Beach.
- Miami. 55.3 million. For the Keys and the Everglades.
- Las Vegas. Nearly 55 million. The start of most Grand Canyon road trips.
- Fort Lauderdale. 32.2 million. Often a cheaper alternative to Miami.
- Tampa. 24.8 million. For the Gulf Coast beaches, and about 90 minutes from Orlando.
- San Francisco. For Yosemite and the Napa Valley.
- Phoenix. For Sedona and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
- Denver. For the Rockies in summer and the ski resorts in winter.
- Boston. For Cape Cod and New England in autumn.
Minivans: the boot problem solved
US minivans are bigger than European 7 seaters. The Toyota Sienna has about 949 litres behind the third row, nearly three times the boot of a typical European 7 seater with all seats up (CarGurus).
For seven people with a large case each, a minivan is usually the better choice than a large SUV. It also has sliding doors, which are easier with children in a tight car park.

The chart shows European models with all seven seats in use, for comparison.
Tolls: cashless in Florida
Florida’s main toll roads no longer take cash. The Central Florida Expressway Authority runs the roads around Orlando and has moved its whole network to cashless tolling (CFX). Paying by plate costs double the E-PASS rate (CFX).
On a hire car, the bill goes to the hire firm. Hire firms usually offer a toll package, either a daily fee or a charge per toll plus an admin fee. For a week of heavy driving a package can work out cheaper, while for a beach stay paying per toll usually wins.

National parks: the $100 surcharge
Since 1 January 2026, international visitors aged 16 and over pay a $100 surcharge, about £75, on top of the normal vehicle fee at 11 of the busiest national parks, including the Grand Canyon and Zion (ABC 17 News).
The America the Beautiful Non-Resident Annual Pass costs $250, about £188. It covers the surcharge for the pass holder and all passengers in one non-commercial vehicle (Visit Utah). For a 7 seater with three or more adults and teenagers, it pays for itself at the first park.
Rules change by state
Child seat laws are set by each state, and most are looser than the UK’s. Florida requires a car seat for children aged three and under, and a seat or booster for four and five year olds (Florida Statutes 316.613). Nevada requires a restraint for children under six and under 57 inches, about 145 cm (GHSA).
UK rules keep children in a seat until 12 years or 135 cm (GOV.UK), and the safety reasons do not change abroad. Turning right on a red light is legal in Florida after you stop, unless a sign says otherwise (Florida Statutes 316.075).
Paperwork
GOV.UK says a UK photocard licence is accepted in the US, but some states and hire firms also ask for an International Driving Permit (GOV.UK). You can only buy an IDP in the UK, so check before you fly.
You will also need an approved ESTA to travel under the Visa Waiver Programme (GOV.UK).
Spending less on a 7 Seater in the USA
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Toll packages, extra liability cover, child seats and young driver fees all sit outside the headline price.
- Match the toll option to your plans. A daily package suits heavy driving. Pay per toll if the car will be parked most days.
- Buy the non-resident park pass. At $250, it covers the surcharge for everyone in the car.
- Book early with free cancellation. School holidays bring the highest demand. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
