Orlando Sanford International Airport welcomes nearly 3 million passengers a year, and Allegiant is a major carrier there (WFTV). It sits north of Orlando, so a 7 seater from here puts the coast and the theme parks in easy reach.
UK families used to fly straight into Sanford, but TUI moved its Orlando flights to Melbourne Orlando International in March 2022 (TTG). Today Sanford suits a family flying on from another US airport, or a group joining a trip already under way.
Drive times to the parks and the coast
The airport’s own guide puts Magic Kingdom about 55 minutes away and Universal Orlando about 45 minutes. Kennedy Space Center and Daytona Beach are each about an hour, and downtown Orlando about 30 minutes (Orlando Sanford Airport).
That makes Sanford a good start for a two-centre trip, with a few days on the Atlantic coast before the parks. Plan the theme park days around the morning traffic on the main roads into Orlando.
Cashless tolls around Orlando
The expressways around Orlando are run by the Central Florida Expressway Authority, which no longer accepts cash at any toll point. Cameras capture the number plate and an invoice goes to the registered owner (CFX).
Paying by plate costs double the electronic rate (CFX). The free Visitor Toll Pass works only for cars collected and returned at Orlando International (Visitor Toll Pass), so at Sanford the hire firm’s own toll plan is the usual route. Read its daily charge before you sign.

Airport works and parking
A runway rebuild was scheduled from January 2025 to February 2026, and a new car park with more than 1,000 spaces is due by December 2026 (Spectrum News 13). New parking rates applied from 1 October 2026 (Orlando Sanford Airport).
If someone is dropping you off or collecting you, allow extra time while the new car park is finished.
Hurricane season and heat
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with a peak around 10 September (National Hurricane Center). Book a rate with free cancellation if you travel in late summer.

When you pass a stopped emergency vehicle or tow truck with lights flashing, move over a lane or slow to 20 mph below the limit (Florida Senate).
