Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Larnaca Airport. Drives to Ayia Napa and Protaras, the Dhekelia base, camera fines, child seats and town parking.
Heading for Ayia Napa or Protaras? The road east crosses a British Sovereign Base Area, policed by SBA Police. Read the section below so the signs make sense.
Larnaca Airport handled 9.91 million passengers in 2025, up 14% on the year before, and the UK was the top source market for Cyprus airports (Hermes Airports via Routes).
Most UK families landing here turn east for the beaches of Ayia Napa and Protaras. Others head west to Limassol or inland to Nicosia. Either way, a 7 seater makes sense on an island where the bus network thins out fast.
Drive on the left, in a familiar car
Cyprus drives on the left, like the UK (Visit Cyprus). After Spain or Greece, that is a relief with a full car.
GOV.UK says you can drive on a UK photocard licence (GOV.UK). It also warns never to hand over your passport as a hire deposit, because that practice is illegal.
Cyprus is outside Schengen, and GOV.UK says it is not affected by the EU Entry/Exit System (GOV.UK). Passports are stamped at Larnaca instead.
Where Larnaca families drive
Approximate road distances from the airport (Cyprus Mail):
- Ayia Napa: about 50 km, 40 to 50 minutes
- Protaras: 60 to 65 km, about an hour
- Nicosia: 50 to 55 km, 40 to 50 minutes
- Limassol: 65 to 70 km, 50 to 70 minutes
The A3 motorway takes you round Larnaca towards Ayia Napa. With the right car and an early start, Limassol and Nicosia are easy day trips from either base.
The Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area
On the way east you pass through Dhekelia, one of two British Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus. There are no controlled borders between the SBAs and the Republic, so you drive straight through (SBA Administration).
The SBA Police enforce traffic law inside the base area. Their summer 2026 operation issued 158 traffic fixed penalty notices or written cautions (Cyprus Mail). The same rules apply, so drive as you would anywhere else on the island.
A new four-lane Larnaca to Dhekelia road opened in full in July 2026, after a 26-year wait (Cyprus Mail). It gives a faster run along the coast towards the Pyla roundabout.

Crossing points near Ayia Napa
Two crossings to the north, Strovilia and Pergamos, sit under the authority of the Sovereign Base Area (Council of the EU). From Ayia Napa or Protaras, Famagusta is a short drive away.
GOV.UK warns that cars hired in the Republic often have no insurance cover in the north, and you will not be let through without the right documents (GOV.UK). Ask your hire firm before you book whether crossing is allowed at all.
Child seats: the 150 cm rule
Cyprus Police say children up to 135 cm must use a child car seat, and those from 135 cm to 150 cm should use a booster (Cyprus Mail).
The UK lets children stop at 135 cm or age 12 (GOV.UK), so a tall 10 year old may need a booster again here. If a young child sits in the front, the passenger airbag should be switched off.
Speed limits and cameras
The motorway limit is 100 km/h, with a 65 km/h minimum. Elsewhere it is 80 km/h outside towns and 50 km/h in built-up areas (Visit Cyprus).
Larnaca is well covered by fixed cameras. They include two points on the Larnaca to Dhekelia road plus several town junctions on Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue and Makariou Avenue (Cyprus Mail).
Fines arrive automatically. Since March 2026, a red light beyond the pedestrian crossing costs €300, about £255, plus three points (Politis). With a hire car, the fine can reach you through the hire firm, which may add an admin charge.
The drink-drive limit is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, or 20 mg for drivers in their first three years. Hand-held phones are banned (Visit Cyprus).
Parking in Larnaca town
Larnaca’s municipal car parks moved to smart parking in December 2025. The first 30 minutes are free, and cars entering the Mackenzie and Tasos Mitsopoulos car parks between 05:00 and 10:00 park free (Fast Forward).
That early-morning rule suits families. Arrive before 10:00 for the Mackenzie beach strip and you park without paying.
Flamingos at the Salt Lake
Larnaca Salt Lake lies just southwest of the town, close to the airport. Flamingos gather there between November and March, and Hala Sultan Tekke mosque stands on its shore (Visit Cyprus). It is an easy first stop on the way out of the airport for a winter-sun trip.
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres. With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot.

For a full family with a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Two families sharing a villa in Protaras may find two smaller cars cheaper and easier to park.
Picking up at Larnaca Airport
Car hire desks are in or close to the arrivals area. Some firms keep their cars at the airport, while others take you to a nearby depot by minibus (Cyprus Mail).
Your voucher will say which applies. The off-airport options are often cheaper. After a night flight, the shuttle wait can matter more than the saving.

Keeping a Larnaca 7 Seater affordable
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Fuel policy, deposit, insurance excess and extra driver charges all sit outside the headline price.
- Respect the cameras. A camera fine plus the hire firm’s admin fee can wipe out the saving you made booking.
- Count child seats against the 150 cm rule. Seats are usually charged per day, so bringing your own boosters can save money.
- Book early with free cancellation. 7 seaters go first in the summer holidays. Lock in a cancellable rate, then search again nearer the date and rebook if prices fall.
