Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Moroccan airports. The 1968 driving permit, zero tolerance on alcohol, new speed cameras and snow on the Tizi n’Tichka pass.
Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 international driving permit. GOV.UK says to carry the 1968 version with your UK licence, and you can only buy one before you leave the UK.
Morocco had a record 19.8 million tourist arrivals in 2025, up 14% (Ecofin). Its airports handled 36.3 million passengers, up 11% (Logistafrica).
For UK families, a 7 seater opens up the Atlas and the coast in a way coach tours cannot. It also asks more of the driver than most of Europe, so read the rules below before you book.
Where to hire a 7 Seater in Morocco
Passenger numbers are for 2025, from airport authority ONDA as reported in the Moroccan press. Where we have a full airport guide, the name links to it, and we add new guides regularly.
- Casablanca Mohammed V. Over 11 million passengers. The main international gateway, between Rabat and the south (Médias24).
- Marrakech Menara. 10.2 million, passing 10 million for the first time. Marrakech to London Gatwick was among its five busiest international routes (Hespress).
- Agadir Al Massira. 3.5 million, up 11%. For the Atlantic beaches of the south (Hespress).
- Tangier Ibn Battouta. 2.8 million, up 17%. For the north coast and Chefchaouen (Hespress).
Licence and paperwork
GOV.UK says you must carry an international driving permit along with your UK licence. Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 permit, so you need the 1968 version, and you cannot buy one outside the UK (GOV.UK).
Keep the car’s insurance and registration documents with you at all times. After any accident, fill in a constat amiable form signed by both drivers (GOV.UK).
Road safety and night driving
GOV.UK warns that road accidents are frequent in Morocco. Night driving is dangerous because of poor lighting and animals on the road, and overloaded lorries overtake on motorways with no hard shoulder (GOV.UK).
Plan long drives for daylight, and leave a bigger gap than you would at home. In a heavy 7 seater with children in the back, there is no reason to rush.

Zero tolerance on alcohol, and new cameras
GOV.UK says any alcohol in your system while driving can bring a fine and possible prison (GOV.UK). If you are driving, do not drink at all.
Speed enforcement has stepped up. The road safety agency added 90 automated radars that check traffic in both directions from June 2025, followed by mobile units in July (Hespress). Keep to the signed limits everywhere, including on quiet rural roads.
Motorway tolls and the Jawaz card
Morocco’s motorways charge tolls. Autoroutes du Maroc sells a prepaid electronic card called Jawaz, officially priced at about £8 (100 dirhams), and around 60% of toll payments now use it (Bladi). Ask at the hire desk whether your car has one.
The Atlas mountains and the Tichka pass
The N9 between Marrakech and Ouarzazate crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Snow closed it on 15 December 2025, with the closure still in force the next day (TelQuel), and snow with rockfalls shut it again on 20 January 2026 (Hespress).
GOV.UK also warns of flash flooding in the mountains and near rivers in winter (GOV.UK). In winter, check the road is open before you set off, and allow a spare day.
Entry rules for UK visitors
UK citizens can visit Morocco for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you arrive, and a damaged passport can be refused (GOV.UK).
Seven people, seven cases
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot (Auto Express).

For a big case each, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater. Medina lanes are far too narrow for any car, so park outside the old towns.
Getting more for your money in Morocco
- Get the right permit before you fly. Without the 1968 permit, you may not be able to collect the car at all.
- Ask for a Jawaz card. Paying tolls electronically is quicker than queueing for cash lanes.
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Deposit, excess, fuel policy and extra driver fees all sit outside the headline price.
- Avoid winter surprises. If the Tichka pass closes, a cancellable booking saves paying for days you cannot use.
