Compare cheap 7 seater car hire at Austrian airports. The digital motorway vignette, Brenner and Arlberg tolls, winter tyre rules and the emergency corridor law.
Every car on an Austrian motorway needs a vignette, and driving without one risks a penalty of up to about £2,550 (€3,000). Ask at the hire desk whether your car has one before you join the motorway.
Austria’s airports handled 36.5 million passengers in 2025, up 2.8% (Vienna.at). UK visitors spent about 1 million nights in Tirol alone over winter 2025/26, up 2.2% (Tirol Tourism).
For a family ski trip or a summer in the lakes, a 7 seater takes everyone and the kit in one go. Austria’s rules on tolls and winter tyres are strict, though, so read the sections below.
Where to hire a 7 Seater in Austria
Passenger numbers are for 2025, from the Austrian airports association (Flughäfen Österreich). Where we have a full airport guide, the name links to it, and we add new guides regularly.
- Vienna. 32.6 million passengers, a record. For the capital and the Danube valley.
- Salzburg. 1.8 million. For the Salzkammergut lakes and the ski resorts south of the city.
- Innsbruck. 883,000. Right in the Tirol, close to the main ski valleys.
The motorway vignette
All motorways and expressways in Austria are tolled (GOV.UK). For 2026, a car vignette costs about £8 (€9.60) for a day, £11 (€12.80) for 10 days, £27 (€32) for two months and £91 (€106.80) for a year (Austrian Government).
The digital vignette is tied to the number plate. Bought online as a consumer, a two-month or annual vignette only becomes valid on the 18th day, while day and 10-day vignettes are valid at once. Without a valid vignette, penalties run from about £255 to £2,550 (€300 to €3,000) (Austrian Government).
From December 2026, Austria sells only digital vignettes, and the paper sticker ends (Austria.info).
Special tolls on the Brenner and Arlberg
Some routes charge a separate toll on top of the vignette. For a car in 2026, a single trip on the A13 Brenner motorway costs about £11 (€12.50), the S16 Arlberg tunnel about £11 (€13), the A10 Tauern motorway about £13 (€15) and the A11 Karawanken tunnel about £8 (€9) southbound (ÖAMTC).
The Luegbrücke on the Brenner route has mostly carried one lane each way since January 2025, with two lanes on about 180 busy days a year (ÖAMTC). Expect queues there in the ski season.

Winter tyres and snow chains
From 1 November to 15 April, cars must have winter tyres on all wheels whenever there is snow or ice on the road. Snow chains on at least two driven wheels are an alternative only when the road is fully covered. Driving without winter tyres in those conditions costs about £85 (€100) (ÖAMTC).
Where a sign says snow chains are required, every vehicle must fit them (Austria.info). Ask at the desk whether chains are in the car, and practise fitting them before you need them.
Austrian rules for UK families
The motorway limit is 130 km/h, and other roads outside towns are limited to 100 km/h. In towns it is 50 km/h. The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g per litre, and 0.1 g for drivers with under three years’ experience. You must carry a first aid kit and a warning triangle, and a reflective vest is compulsory too (Your Europe).
Children under 14 and under 135 cm must use a child restraint, with one child per seat (Austrian Government).
When traffic slows on a motorway, form an emergency corridor straight away: the left lane moves left and the right lane moves right. Failing to do so can cost about £617 (€726), and up to about £1,850 (€2,180) if you block an emergency vehicle (Austrian Government).
Licence and entry
A UK photocard licence is valid in Austria if you are 18 or over. GOV.UK notes that hire firms often set stricter rules, such as a higher minimum age (GOV.UK).
Austria is in the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System records your fingerprints and photo on arrival. Children aged 11 or under are photographed but not fingerprinted (GOV.UK).
Seven people and their skis
A large suitcase holds 80 to 110 litres (Markenkoffer). With all seven seats in use, the roomiest common 7 seaters manage about 340 to 350 litres of boot (Auto Express).

With ski bags too, look for the ACRISS FV class, meaning seven or more seats plus more space, or book an 8 or 9 seater.
Keeping a 7 Seater in Austria affordable
- Buy the right vignette. A 10-day vignette at about £11 (€12.80) covers most ski weeks.
- Plan around the special tolls. Each Brenner or Arlberg trip adds a charge on top of the vignette.
- Compare the total, not the daily rate. Deposit, excess, fuel policy and charges for chains or winter tyres change the price.
- Book early for ski season. UK school holidays fill the fleets, so lock in a cancellable rate and search again later.
